Hi all,
have any of you ever seen any characature models carved?

Years ago, I worked for Mike Karslake, a professional modelmaker.  Years before he had been asked to make some "funny" models for Silver City Airways who operated from Southend Airport.
They were operating Bristol Freighters and he carved a big bulbous "cuddly" shaped model about 3 " long, sprayed it silver and the client loved it.  later, he carved Jumbo jets in the same way and hung one up from the ceiling of his workshop. It was there for years until one day a policeman who was a regular visitor for a chat and a cup of tea, showed us what his hobby was.  He took out of a matchbox a perfect working model pistol, which he loaded with bullets he'd also made and he fired it, using special thimbles on his finger tips.

When the dust settled Mike's Jumbo jet model had been blown to bits!  It was just half a wing hanging from a thread!

Happy Days!,

Martin,

Yes!  Lou and others in SMM have carved caricature models, calling them "air-toons".  There should be photos in the gallery of their wonderful efforts.

These caricature models have a long history and pedigree behind them,Chris Wren an artist for the 'Aeroplane' magazine first introduced them into his regular cartoon features, soon model builders were emulating them and some kits were done by Astral featuring a de havilland Flamingo with the face of Churchill smoking a cigar ! I have never ever actally seen one of these original kits just the advertisements that appeared in the 'Aeromodeller' ,in later years Fujimi kits brought them up to date with their eggcraft kits, these too are highly collectable.
Now Lou is carrying on with that tradition and producing his Airtoons as solida.
