3D Printing?

This site www.shapeways.com was mentioned on one of my wargaming groups. I am not a very computer savvy kinda guy and don't much about computer designing or 3D printing. But watching the introductory video got me to thinking about using 3D printing to manufacture hard to carve parts like engines, props, landing gear, canopies etc. Has anyone ever thought of trying this?
