Oceaneer99

It's been a busy summer here in Seattle, though it came a little late weather-wise.  We had some of our warmest sustained weather last week, much later than usual.  That's meant a lot of outdoor activities, and some travel, too.  I put in quite a bit of time into outdoor house projects that had been languishing, and often been taking up space in the garage.  Most recently, I've been working on some canoe and kayak upgrades and hopefully get some paddling in before the weather changes.

I've also been working on cleaning out my garage, which had been getting more an more crowded over the years.  I've done a lot of clean-up and clean-out, but still have a long way to go -- I haven't started sorting through my wood and plywood stacks yet -- dreading that part.  I did find the wood I was drying to make a new basement workbench, which is where I build my models.  On my current basement bench, I have a few wooden models that are sitting there half-finished, laughing at me.  They may have to wait for those dark winter evenings, though I do try to catch up on the discussions here every few days.

Everybody have a look at the models posted to the Gallery by Scratch39 (Noel). They are outstanding. I hope he will give us details of his efforts to produce these magnificent models.

Beautiful work, Noel!  Models in this small size are so enticing, but so difficult to make.  You have done a truly superb job with these.

What beautiful models by Scratch,we have had a good month for new members bringing with them their skills to share with us all, once again this shows that there are still people out there prepared to go that extra mile to build as we do.

Here is Pete's latest offering of a British Aerospace Concorde made from butternut wood.

Pete has a great knack for finishing his models in natural wood.

Another great model from Pete. This time an Royal Canadian Navy Avenger.

These latest model are made from his dwindling supply of butternut wood.

Hi Barry,

According to "World Woods in Colour" by Willaim A Lincoln, Butternut is Juglans Cinera, commercially known as White Walnut.  From the description in the book it would be ideal for solid modelling:
"It is easily worked with both hand and power tools.  There is little resistance to cutting edges which must be kept very sharp because of the softness of the wood.  The wood nails, screws and glues well, and can be stained and brought to an excellent finish."
"It is an excellent carving wood."
Hope this helps.

Regards
Will

Very late for the September PING. But as I didn't do my pilgrimage as planned - too old, legs and knees wouldn't take it and any other number of excuses - I'm back to the modelling.

Therefore I'm trying to rectify a number of painting errors on my 1/96th P51. When originally started it was the first time I'd tried an airbrush, silver enamel over SIG Sanding Sealer and a number of other "firsts".

Am painting the DH98 Mosquito & have one coat on the top and bottom. Plus have been taking photos for background.

Have two Hellcats waiting to be painted.

Only other significant projects on the go is to just try to keep breathing.

Cliff.
