carving a Child's Sailplane

Guys,  I would like to carve a solid wood sailplane for my daughter.  She is expressing interest in planes at 15mos.!

What wood should I use?

How do I finish it?

Laquer, paint, urethane?

I would like it to last but also be non toxic in case she chooses to gnaw at it.

Kenny may be your best bet. He made a Spitfire and Hurrican for his young son. I don't know much about non toxic finishes so let's hope Kenny drops in to assist you.

As far as I can find, we have one working glider on our site;

You might check with your local paint store for "Child Safe" paint. I think most would agree that birch 1/8th birch plywood would be your strongest bet, but I don't know how well it would fly.

Child safe paint is on the market. Most paint stores and outlets like Home Depot have paints that are child safe.
As for the right wood selection, I would do a web search for the Federal Toy Standards as to what woods and fasteners are considered safe.  The other issue is making sure there are no small parts that could present a chocking hazard.
