Curtiss XP-239 Swift was a brave attempt by Curtiss to fulfill a contract for a fighter aircraft,the design was originally fitted with a radial powerplant although Curtiss were not happy with the U.S.Army intervention to steer them away from the original inline unit,after testing the Swift which combined the 'old with the new' ie Shrike wings with a more modern enclosed cockpit was deemed inadequate,thus the one and only prototype was relegated to a ground engineers school with a new 'Z' designation desguising its origins.
