Finished chisel and friends
Top to bottom:

The new 3/8-inch #9 straight gouge I bought recently

My finished homemade 1/8-inch chisel. I decided to heat harden the steel again, and this time tempered it to 400 F in an oven. The handle is an octagonal-shaped piece of birch. I drilled a hole all the way through, 1/64-inch smaller than the original music wire. Then I drove the handle on with a mallet, with the blade end of the chisel sunk into a hunk of 2x4. Fortunately, all went well.

The blank for a new chisel, about 3/8-inch wide. I annealed, then hammered 9/64-inch music wire while red hot to get the general shape. I used files to smooth and refine the shape.
