I did not turn the cowlings on my wood lathe....instead, I made them in sections. First a ring with a 1/8" wall was cut out on my bandsaw and then I used a disc sander to turn the outside smooth. Next, I used a 1-1/2" forstner bit to hog out the inside and then turned it smooth on a spindle sander. I repeated the process for the front of the cowling and glued them together.
