Title: World War One Armistice 100th Anniversary - Cook Up
Post by: lastvautour on December 05, 2017, 12:04:22 AM
Following Gordon's recommendation we will have a cook up starting 1 Jan 2018. This cook up is to commemorate the hundred anniversary of end of the First World War. Suggestions are requested as to how to structure this build.

A suggestion would be to google aviation events 1918. You should get a great list of things.
I suggest any aircraft in the search result. Scale is personal preference.
Models to be completed by Armistice Day 2018.

I'm going to attempt 1/32 Sopwith Scooter and Swallow . If time permits a 1/32 Sopwith Dolphin.
  Cheers

I have had a craving for doing a Biplane series like Tom Solury collection.
(http://smm.solidmodelmemories.net/Gallery/albums/userpics/normal_Tom_Solury_Collection_001.jpg) They look around 1/32 scale. Maybe a 1/350 ship or two and I need to attempt a tank.

Vehicle section: I will make a Mark I tank or two. Maybe a male and a female.
Aircraft section: I love the Nieuport series.
Ships: trying to find drawings of SS Imo and SS Mont Blank. These two ships collided in Halifax harbour 6 Dec 1917 devastating the city and surrounding area. The collision created is the largest non-nuclear explosion of all time. Amazingly the Imo was salvaged and sail again under another name. Parts of the Mont Blanc hull were reported reaching 300 ft of altitude. You can view the details at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halifax_Explosion

For a tank I'm looking at a Medium A Whippet. 135 track links and for a ship HMS Killybegs.

Just re-discovered a great book I've had for years:  FIGHTER AIRCRAFT OF THE 1914-1918 WAR ; by Lamberton and Cheesman; 1960
It has roughly 90 aircraft featured in 3 view measured line illustrations, along with numerous photos and technical details.  If anyone would like a scan of a particular plane, email me and I'll do what I can...

Ray, here is your opportunity to do your SE5.

I have some Profile Publication Profiles of several WWI aircraft.

Further research revealed that Canada had two ships at the beginning of WWI and received two more from the Royal Navy. All of which have no decent deck plans on line. HMS/HMCS Rainbow has limited drawings. Several Royal Navy ships were crewed by Canadians so more research is in order.

Nieuport 11 Bebe has been started. Drawings are scaled, printed and pasted onto cardboard for templates. May do two?? At 1/32 scale it is a small model measuring 7.13 inches with 9.28 wingspan. I have not made a biplane in quite a while except for the toys.

Had a quick look on google. He does come up as flying Bristol F2B B1113 of 48 squadron RFC.
There is an image for Kieth Parks F2b ( also flew with 48 squadron).

Serials were either in white or black on the fin. 48 Sqn identifying markings appear to have been 2
Vertical white stripes after the rounded. Not much but hope it helps.

  I've started a 1/32 Fokker D VIII.

Great start Larry.

1 - Nieuport 11 has wings blocked shape. Even in 1/32 scale these wings are thin.
2 - HMCS Aurora yet to be started. Did find out the Royal Canadian Navy revieved the Royal ascent in 1911 and had two ships. It was the third largest navy immediately after WWII. Today is just a shadow of those days.
3 - Nil progress on the Mark I

Moving along:

1. Nieuport fuselage, wings and tail feathers rough cut. Engine started.
2. HMCS Aurora drawings scaled to 1/350 scale. Will come out about 14 inch length.
3. Mark V drawings scaled to 1/32 scale. Will come out at 9.9 inches. Note switch to Mk V as it was the only mass produced tank of the lot.

Fuselage and wing are balsa. Tail plane is 1.5mm ply.

At this stage I'm planning on making a " half " Oberursal.

Work will be on hold for a few days as I will be away.

Went to the Australian War Memorial yesterday.

"Mephisto" the captured A7V was in there last time. There is now the Mark IV tank in its place.

The left side sponson has been removed to reveal the interior.

Toss up between the Whippet and the Mark IV now.

Nieuport is looking good.

Looking at options for simulating the ribs. The Nieuport 11 had very thin wings and drawing do not show any dip between rib bays. I need to do some more looking at closeup photos. The first three ribs are masking tape and the next three are wax thread. These will be fared in with thicken paint. I am reluctant to sand the indents as they are very shallow.

Lou
Title: Re: World War One Armistice 100th Anniversary - Cook Up
Post by: lastvautour on February 13, 2018, 10:33:33 PM
Decided to go with a combination off sanding the rib bays and adding 1mm masking tape on the rib locations. It looks pretty good in person, but can't get a decent picture of the top wing as the sanding is suttle. I am using antique white to simulate the doped canvas of the French machine I chose. It is also being used as the primer colour. The white on the rudder is masked off for the the red and blue.

Wings glued and I wish I had installed the control column, seat and instrument panel first but there is room do do so later. The rigging has been started. I drilled holes for the mono-film fishing line and used super glue at one end. Once totally set, I suspended a clamp to bring the line tight and used another bead of superglue to hold in place. I will then snip the extra and use a drop of paint to fill the area.

I've decoded on how I'm going to finish the EV/DVIII .
Follow the link and the bottom two pictures show Fokker EV 201/18.
The rudder is done in Belgian colours. The fin, tailplane  and fuselage are in lozenge. The cowling and wheel covers are in my opinion "yellow".
In both pictures there is a roundel on the bottom surface of the starboard wing.
I'm assuming that the wing would have been "green" top and bottom. Not to sure of fuselage longerons .There is a colour variation.
I shall think on it a bit more.

A replica of this machine was built and flown in 2005. Overall green with roundels and a white "17" .
I've managed to conjure up some homemade lozenge decals. I've painted the rudder and applied a decal to the fin.
Still working on the cowling.

Wheels have been done using a balsa core faced both sides with thin ply. The tyres are from electrical flex insulation joined with a short length of wire. Grey primer was used for the tyres and then graphite appilied with a brush . Sealed with Matt clear

   http://www.aresgames.eu/14253.

I'll see if I can get a worthwhile picture up before I go away for a week ( off to build a skin on frame kayak course in Tasmania with my son).

Still work required on engine and cowling.

Wing nearly done.
Lozenge decal applied top and bottom of tailplane and to fin.
Lozenge applied to lower surface of U/c fairing.
Plastic wheel covers have been painted yellow and applied to wheel disc's.
Still to do the two guns, engine and cowling, all the struts.
Decals have been done

I had thought about track links. Didn't think of using 1/2 round on each link. Interesting idea.
I've 118 of them to make ( the last time I counted them) .
In doing the whippet I've come across a term I hadn't heard of.
"Track spuds".
Various pictures show different vehicles festooned with these and cans of petrol plus other gear.

I'm going to finish this one as "Musical Box". Interesting story and was involved with Australians at Battle of Amiens 8th August 1918.

I'll think about the tracks and experiment and let you know.

find a lot of onfo there, like underneath the plane wasn't painted but left doped, found a way to make mine look like that, has pics of weathering and staining from casteroil.finally got the Cleveland model co 1/32 plan of the plane for accuracy.found a pic of photo etched parts for another kit of the plane just had to size it for mine.for templates, trying to come up a way to show stiching for fus, going to have hollowed out cockpit

  Results of track experiment.
Used 0.4mm ply and 1mm 1/2 round styrene. Styrene  stuck on leaving 1/2 mm overlap for next track plate to go under.
round head attachment bolts simulated with PVA glue applied with a bamboo skewer. Had to do this a couple of times.
  Appears to work.
Only another 112 to go. I'll work out attachment later.

I've run out of 1/2 round so track link production has stopped.
Thinking about how to clad the basic block shapes to make it look like armour. Have to knock up 4 x .303 Hotchkiss mg's

Some progress on EV. Not having much success with fuselage lozenge decal, Have tried and failed twice. Colours seem to break up on the carrier.
I'm going to try a different paper and fixative to see if that cures the problem. Had minor splitting with other decals that I've applied to this but not as noticeable.

Only 5 bits of Blue tack holding things together.

Going away for a week .

Whose decal paper are you using? I have two printers, both HP. Both print the dark colours, mainly roundel red and blue, but one takes twice the bonder and even then, there is a problem with holding the ink together on the older model printer. This was not always the case so I wonder if the ink formula has been changed slightly for better adsorption on plain paper. I use cartridge 21/22. The other printer is only a year old and does not have that problem.

Other wise your work is spectacular.

I need a trip to the city to get some half round stock also.

No plastic strips at the city. I ordered on line with a late May delivery date. I am experimenting with straight pins for those big rivets. Extra fine dress making pins cut down and placed in holes made with a compass point. I will need a better template for the single and double row panel rivets as these are a bit sloppy when done with my Mk I Eyeball.

Unsuccessful also in quest for 1/2 round. I like the idea of using pins.
The whippet has a lot of nuts and bolts holding it all together.

The very fine dressmaker pins have a smaller head than the standard pin. I ordered 1/4 round in two sizes but think the 1mm will do the trick. With 8 pins per track link, I will need a trip to the city.

I purchased 1200 pins and about 1% have poorly formed heads. A quick calculation shows I will need 1280 just for the tracks so another trip to the store is in order. I ordered the half round strips but they are not anticipated to arrive before early June.

1280 pins !  Mmmm!!  I'll stick with drops of PVA for the tracks. Got some pins for the round headed ones on the main body.

Thinking about how to mass produce 1/32 nuts .

Fokker- just need to add controls , cockpit rim, rear struts and then I can glue it all together. On the photos that I'm using there is a colour line on the upper and lower longeron
I did try to mask one off but found even with proprietary  masking tape I was starting to lift the lozenge decal. So that won't be happening.
I'll add the upper wing decals on a white base decal circle after I've added the aileron controls
Whippet - Proceeding on. Plan to use pins for the round headed ones on the body etc.., thinking about how to make homemade 1/32 nuts.
The exhausts are made using left over cylinder stock from the EV/DVIII. Photos of the whippet show the exhausts are lagged . Piping is single core electrical wire.
Bit of judicious painting and from 3 feet away they should look the part.

Off to more therapeutic dabbing of PVA onto small bits of ply.

Cheers

I'll try the hexagon styrene for bolts and nuts. Just got to find some.

Progress to date.
Fokker - one piece of blue take in use. Propping up rear of wing centre section. using this to cut rear struts to length.
Control horns added. Cockpit coaming done using wet tissue moulded to shape. allowed to dry the sealed with PVA. Seemed to work.

Whippet - some cut off pins added ( fuel tank at front). More dabs of PVA on track housings. Various panels done out of plastic coffee cup tops cut out using a sharpened brass tube.
              - home made Hotchkiss barrels ( brass) . Gun ports moulded from 5 minute epoxy in a blue tack mould using olive oil as a release agent. The shape of which was done using the top of
pen. Engine cover from cereal box card.

Lou,

Nice work so far on the Aurora.

Whippet so far.

More work required on back end plus driver's vision slits.

Have made up some basic decals. Looking at the picture the writing on the fuel tank cover looks like it was applied "freehand". So that might present some minor difficulty.

Tracks require some more work.
Again looking at the picture there would appear to be clods of dirt adhering to the the areas where the bolts are.

Starting to look like a Whippet.

Cheers

The rivet detail worked out great. What colour are you using for the body. I am currently thinking olive green to match a photo I saw and cannot find again. Many tanks have the tri colours on the sides and I may go that way for greater visibility like your Whippet.

I saw somewhere ( probably a model WW1 tank kit )mention of an "olive brown" for Whippets. None exists . The closest is Vallejo USA Olive Drab FS34084 so I've gone with that .

If you google olive brown model colour you come up with the usual wandering trail.

Half the fun is the research.

Have now done the Engine ventilator shield , Drivers' Vision slits . "letter box " at base of entry door. All out of evergreen angle and stiff note paper folded over and glued with PVA.
There is a "rolled " piece of metal at the rear of the vehicle. I'm waiting for a piece of .4mm ply to dry in its mold.

Bolts to be added and then painted. The strap at the rear is from a double layer of thick paper glued together with PVA.
They blue tape is just to hold the engine hatch in place.

The Whippet is finished.

I've attempted to do the markings on the fuel tank with the smallest brush I have.

I've left of the musical notes part of it. I can't get a clear look at them on the Photo.

I didn't check the photo until after I started putting on all the track spuds.

I you look at the photo you will see 5 fuel tins. I've put 3 on.

There is reference in the narrative by the crew commander of fuel running into the cabin.

Also the starboard track guard bracket is missing. I haven't put mine back on. Parted company during final handling.

As to what would have been in the stowage bins I don't know so made it up.

Enjoyed it.

Lou,

I used some evergreen angel and some thin sheet plastic cut into strips the appropriate width.

Made up a temporary jig ( using pins and blue tack) to hold the evergreen angle and marked off where the louvers were to go. Turned out relatively straight.

I made a box with Evergreen .015 X .080 inch strips and insert .030 rods. It came out pretty good. My large nuts on the sprocket holders are coffee stir sticks we picked up last Sunday's breakfast outing. I printed the image and glued it to the stick. I used large straight nail clippers at an outward angle to produce the nut. A few straight pins to hold the assembly in place. I amaze myself at time(not often) sometimes.

A sole month to go before the 100th anniversary of the armistice.  My HMS Aurora is slowly coming together with some progress on the forward deck and main bridge. I will attempt to finish before the end of the month. I am volunteering to sell poppies for our local Royal Canadian Legion Branch on the 27th of Oct and 4th of Nov. Last year I made some poster boards showing our Canada's Armed Forces with pcitures and text. This year I will display my Nieuport 11, Mark V tank and hopefully HMS Aurora. My personal project was to search the  National Archives of Canada to see if I could collect all the names of the local area men who served. I collected 165 names and made a booklet dedicated to my Grand father who was a soldier in WWI. All names will be displayed for all to see as well as 11 of our long gone heros who did not return to their families.

Only one piece of Blue tac in use. Holding the tail on.

Turned out relatively square.

Had to trim the outer ( Brass) struts to size . Will have to remake the the right angle ones. Just mm too short.

Great job on the model. The wing ribs look outstanding!! I'm always impressed by wing ribs. They bring the model to life.

Awesome model Gordon.

Lou

Armistice research found Russians, Dutch, French(France), American and men from several other countries that came to Canada to enlist. The greatest numbers came from England.

My Armistice model project is complete as of 19 Oct 2018. It was well worth the efforts as I enjoyed myself tremendously building and seeing other people's wonderful contributions to the entire Armistice Group Build.

1/350 scale HMS Aurora was launched earlier today. The intent was to make a Canadian ship. I found out 3/4 through the project that the Royal Canadian Navy only took her on strength in 1920. As the Royal Navy's Her Majesty Ship Aurora may have had Canadian sailors as part of her wartime commitments. It was a challenge as few decent photos survived and available drawings are misleading.

Two new models from John Cairns who just lost everything in the Woolsey fire but luckily the photos were saved if not the models them selves. Thank you John for taking time to contribute to the build despite your hardships. The first is a DH-9 and the second a DH-2. Nicely done John.
