Title: The Big Prize Contest September 2013
Post by: Oceaneer99 on September 01, 2013, 05:03:14 PM
SMM Build Instruction Contest rules 2013

Solid Model Memories (SMM) is proud to announce a new type of contest.  The contest will be for the best build instructions for a solid model.  Part of the intent of this contest is to provide a repository of build instructions to help new and existing members of SMM learn about each other's techniques.  A donor has graciously pledged prize money to be used for prizes.

1. Contest entry: The contest entry shall consist of written and illustrated build instructions for a model, along with any drawings, plans, or templates necessary to complete the model.
2. Prizes: prizes will be:
     a. First Prize $250 Canadian
     b. Second Prize $175 Canadian
     c. Third Prize $75 Canadian
3. Eligibility: members of SMM are eligible to submit entries.
4. Deadline: deadline for entries is September 30, 2013 at 11:59 pm (Pacific Standard Time: Vancouver, BC, Los Angeles, CA)
5. Selection of winning entries will be based on voting by members of Solid Model Memories.  Entrants can vote, but we ask they not vote for themselves.
6. Voting will be conducted within one month of the deadline, to give members time to review entries.
7. Officiating of entries: final arbitration of entries, winners, and prizes will be performed by SMM administrators
8. SMM administrators are not eligible for prizes but may submit entries
9. Format of submission: Each entrant will be given a place on the forum that only they can write to, where they will place text and photos to illustrate the build sequence.
10. Subject: the subject model can be any craft, vessel, or vehicle, made substantially out of solid wood.  Plans must be found on the SMM gallery web site.
11. The subject model may be constructed from scratch or from an existing kit, provided the plans are available on the SMM gallery. The bibliographic source of any plans, kits, or documentation should be listed in the build instructions.
12. The model illustrated in the instructions is allowed to have been constructed before the start of the contest.
13. Level of detail: the build instructions should be sufficient for a non-expert to build the model.  It is fair to assume that the builder has built one ID model from the plans available in the 1940s.  However, build instructions for absolute beginners will be accepted and encouraged.
14. Build instructions should include photographs or drawings and text in English.
15. Rights to submission:
     a. Entrants maintain copyright and ownership of their submission.  Please include any copyright messages appropriate for your home country or region.
     b. Entrants gives SMM the right to publicly post their entry for judging and review
     c. Entrants give SMM permission to create derivative work based on their entry after the contest.  The entrant will be given full credit, with a notation that the work was edited by SMM.  Examples of derivative work: your entry may be edited for style and consistency to appear alongside other entries as part of the publicly-accessible SMM web site for download by the public.  Your original submission will remain accessible after the contest unless you would like the original to be removed.
     d. Copyright for any plans or documentation included with the entry will remain with the original copyright holder.
16. The SMM staff reserves the right to disqualify entrants, to close the contest, or to modify the terms of the contest at any time.  Changes to rules will be posted to the SMM gallery.
17. Payment of prizes is contingent on the pledge of the donor.  Winners are responsible for any taxes, fees, or costs associated with their winnings in their home countries.
18. Questions about the contest should be sent to administrator@solidmodelmemories.net, or posted to a discussion thread for the contest on the SMM forum web site.  The SMM staff will try to answer your questions as quickly as possible.

Please let me know if you intend to enter the contest.

We have Pete Morrow's Phantom Project.

I know Gary is having difficulty logging in and we are working with him.

Anyone else?  I notice there are some recent postings that aren't far off from the contest guidelines.

Hi Garet,

Since I know only how to make profile models, I don't think I am eligible to enter.
I would love to learn how to make a solid model though.
This contest is a good way to get beginners like myself up to speed.
It would be nice to see instructions on:
1) what tools do you need
2) how to choose your type of wood
3) how to overcome known problems
etc.

Looking forward to other people entering.

LaVA Gorrit, you can sign up for the novice ID to start you on your way. See the Novice WWII ID Group Build and select a subject. I will guide you through all stages of making a solid.

Barry, we are extending the contest deadline, especially if we know that others would like to participate.  I exchanged messages with another member who had some technical difficulties.  We would love to see you enter.

Congratulations to all who partook in the Contest. As it has been expressed elsewhere the results, although more limited than was hoped, have shown that there is a place and future for solid models. Perhaps sometime in the future others will see fit to support such efforts by the administrators of SMM.

Cliff.
