The collection of 1=200th scale miniature solids continues to grow,a DC-4,Venom and Vampire have been added to the cache,here today a photocall was staged to show them together,for scale comparison a 1=72nd scale Kittyhawk ( the one we did from Lous tutorial ) and a five pence piece plus a 12 inch rule are included in the picture.

When you need to fine tune your oil painting skills you go to watercolour for a while,when you make big solids and need to hone your skills you build em tiny !
Wait until you see the first hand built castings they will really come alive with the tiny roundals and registrations,it has been a fun journey and learning curve even to this stage.

Barry, what a nice collection of models. I've only built one at near this scale, and I found it completely different than 1/72. Well done!

Here we have a solid Short Belfast nestling amongst some period Dinky Toys,the idea of extending the range of models was an idea that I had as early as 1970 when this particular model was made,it was fabricated from scraps of Jelutong swept up from the pattern shops floor,a thing that I did back then,alas many of these specialised places have now gone as computers have taken over the work.
Many of the models shown here and in the album have been modified,restored or wooden parts added to,for example the Nimrod was made from a Comet and the Westland Widgeon helicopter modified from a Sikorsky S-51,when needs be you just do it and chop and modify to get the results needed.

How many where issued by Dinky and where there anu other manufacturers at this scale? I have seen newly issued airliners by various sources but are mainly diecast.

Hundreds of them Lou,it first started with Germany who produced Wiking 1=200th models for the Luftwaffe,this company carried on postwar and expanded on their range,then there was Mercury in Italy,Solido in France,CIJ France etc as 1=200th lost favour over 1=144th scale collectors started to manufacture their own,TOTS (stands for the one true scale) continue to produce models within their members who are skilled at producing delightful things like R.E.8's,Tiger Moth's etc.
Pre war Dinkies were a different larger scale,over the years Dinky produced scores of different types up until the seventies when they changed scale for 1=72nd doing the Spitfire,Hurricane,Harrier,Ju.87,Phantom etc etc.
I have every Dinky type made including the French Dinkies.

Lou collecting miniature aeroplanes has to be the most expensive of the collecting fields,fortunately I got most of mine pre internet days with my father buying me the Avro York for a birthday present,I still have it pristine in its box as many others.
Yes very collectable but I love them and add to them by extending the models with home brew subjects.
