Title: Canadair CL-44 / RCAF CC-106 Yukon.......................(Completed 25 Oct 2011)
Post by: lastvautour on February 05, 2010, 01:34:48 AM
I would ask my British friend to see if they have drawings of the Bristol Brittania. The Yukon was a pretty close to being just a stretched Brittania and would do for drawings.

Received some awesome detailed drawing of the Bristol Brittania from Garet. I have already made a prototype stretched drawing representing the Yukon in 1/72 scale. The fuselage is 2 inches in diameter and just over 23 inches long. Not a small project by any means.

The drawings have been enlarged to 1/72 and the Brittania has been stretched into a Yukon.

It looks to have a lot of potential as a finished Yukon, Lou, but, I'm also intrigued by your Beach C45 because, as you know, I'm still having concerns as to how to treat silver. How did you achieve such an outstanding finish to the "Bug Smasher"?

Sorry Cliff, the Beech 18 is a plastic model. However, a smooth surface coated with gloss and them sprayed silver/chrome does an adequate job.

Thanks again Lou. I've just received a downloadable Manual on Testors and Model Master Paints. While very informative - in fact the group could benefit from the info contained -  it adds to my confusion.

The Yukon is finally on the move with the wood having been selected, marked and cut. The fuselage block is starting to take shape. Roll out date is not expected to be before the end of the year.

A few more strokes with the hand planer and some sanding are showing results.

Roll out anticipated to be early 2011.

Moving right along.
The dihedral break has been marked but is yet to be cut on my scroll saw.
The mating of wing and fuselage will not occur until the engine nacelles are attached and dihedral break has been completed.

Is this basically a streamlined Argus? It is a good looking plane.

The Argus and the Yukon were both taken from the Bristol Britannia.

Carried out some work on the Yukon wing to fuselage joint. A work around to using putty or small pieces of laminated wood to make the wing leading edge filet was not feasible. If this works out, it will open all sorts of other projects I feared due to large filets.

Yes I see what you are doing there Lou,a module in itself for the fillet, most interesting, best of luck it looks promising.

The filet is working out. A bit more carving and sanding  and the project should be ready for the final priming before paint.

The trailing edge filets have been installed and await the wing before final fairing into the fusleage. The wing/fusleage joint has since been glued and clamped. Putty and sanding will follow. Thanks to the wooden filets, putty use will be minimal.

The tan area in the above photo has been sanded and a bit more putty added to complete the training edge filet. A total prime job is just around the corner. Due to its size, the Yukon and Argus will have to move to the garage for painting.

The Yukon has been sanded and require just a few touch ups around the wing root area. The Yukon roll out should be later this summer. The white top fuselage and tail have been primed in white and will be painted gloss after the touch ups have been done.

After having primed the entire aircraft I noticed the forward fuselage did not quite look right. Rechecking against the templates and judicious use of coarse sandpaper brought things back in line. I am once again in the paint booth and applying white primer as an undercoat to the gloss white.

Masked and siting in the paint shop. A second coat of red is forthcoming and them masking and metallic paint.  the red panels were to assist locating the aircraft should it go down in the great white north.

Well worth the wait Lou,it is surprising how long some paints take to flash off, with modern paints the shelf life is extended with dryers that take a tad more to go off.
Great paintwork, the red panels really set the scheme off.

The attached doc hold the home made fuselage flashes. The RCAF lettering is on the other PC and will be seen only after it is applied.

Thanks Barry. I closed off a section of the basement in an attempt to control the dust. The stand behind me was my old PC work sation, but alas that crashed two days after the up stairs PC let go. I now have an ACER PC that does the minimum which is what I really needed. Oh, by the way, I managed to open my portable drive once and retrieved all my pictures and data. I received a replacement portable drive which will be used solely for backup. Me and electronics don't always agree. Must be my aura.

Dust is always an issue.  I finally convinced my son that he needs to clean up after his projects, too. He's carving a wooden octopus now.

Garet, dust will do us in with the misses rather quickly so cleaning up often is the key. Let us see that octopus!

Mark, thanks, a bit of jet exhaust and steel paint does a neat job of highlighting various areas. I don't normally do this but I decided to give it a try.

But you do have silver on the bottom part of your models, Lou. How do you manage masking over silver? I've been using silver enamel and then trying to seal the silver by over- spraying with "Glosscoat." But even then the masking tape removed the coating of "Glosscoat" but leaving the enamel!!!!!!!!

Cliff, if you look at the upper photos, the model is painted gloss white overall first and then I mask the white and spray the silver after. I do the same for the red panels.

Barry. Thanks. The credit goes to Ken for starting the twirleys.
