Title: 1/72 F-86 Canadair Mk 5 Golden Hawk......................(Completed 29 Aug 2014)
Post by: lastvautour on August 03, 2014, 03:09:37 PM
While rummaging through my decal box I came across a set of after market decals for the Golden Hawk. The current Sabre has been started and photos will be post shortly. The attached drawing was downloaded from http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww3/f/97 I could spend years viewing all they have.Link has been deactivated

The forward fuselage was left thicker to simulate the Avon Sabre intake. The fuselage center section has also been left slightly fatter than required. I can sand down the extra and continue with the Mk 6. Just wanted to see if it would match photos of the CA-27.

A switch to the first Golden Hawks as a Mk 5. Reason being is that only the early Mk 5s had gold painted on the leading edges of wings and intakes before finding out that the paint quickly eroded with use. They also realized that the paint in on exhaust area changed colour with  the constant heat in that area. Later scheme reduce the length of the red flash and saw introduction of bare metal leading edges.
Current model has primer/filler applied as gold paint shows all scratches left from sanding.

Krylon spray can metallic gold finished with clear gloss gives it about the right shine.

Lou. is that P51 in the background painted silver with Krylon too? And exactly what is Krylon composed of?

Krylon is water based acrylic. I use the clear for the decal binder. I only wish they had a light gray primer.  The clear comes in satin(semi-gloss) and high gloss. Some colours are similar. There are a few that can be used as camouflage colours.

I constructed an F-86 common markings decal. Mine will print out in 1/72 when used in MS Word. I have not tried to insert the image and check what size one gets. If you use it you will need to do a test print to see how close to 1/72 you will get. It could be resized for any scale.

Looking good Lou, you seem to have got the better of spraying the metallic colours, this one and the Mustang look great.  Can't wait to see this one finished. Regards Paul.

While placing the decals I found that I needed two each of the ailerons and flaps. Also the intake and exhaust require enlargement by 25 and 100 % respectively. Anyone wanting the corrected separate decal items need only ask. It will be emailed in MS Word 97-2003 format

Roll out 29 Aug 2014. The decals are after market from Sabre Decals that I bought some 25-30 years ago and maybe longer. The fuselage flash did not want to lift from the paper baking so some persuasion had to be undertaken with hot water and a gentle pull. They went on well and stayed put. The leaf in the wing roundels are slight off center but do not detract to much from the overall look.

A close up of the wing shows how much detail can be printed on the decal sheet. The second photo shows that the flap decal must be cut to line up if the wings are not perfectly to size. Mine are slightly off hence the work around.

Another beauty Lou.   I only recently discovered the potential for adding small details via decals.  Great work.

Thank you Mark. Decals that have rivet patterns should not be to hard to duplicate on our own printers. Something to think about.

Thank you Jorrit. In this case the clear spray gave it the correct shine.
