Title: A Galleon of the Air - Supermarine Southampton plan request
Post by: Will on May 25, 2011, 12:25:36 PM
Hi guys

Does anyone have a decent drawing of the Supermarine Southampton they could upload (preferably the Mk2 metal-hulled with sweep-back)?  I've found tiny versions in odd books and some pixelly ones on the web, but they're either unconvincing or too small to see detail suitable for modelling.  I'm sure one of the old mags (Air Stories, Model Airplane News or Aeromodeller) must have had a plan as JH Stevens built one in 1/36 according to "Skybird Notes" and Doylend illustrates his model (1/72 probably) in "Aircraft in Miniature".  Maybe it's a bit of a challenge for a neophyte solid-modeller but the Southampton looks very elegant in photos, and its a local to me in name and manufacture.
This is what I mean

Thanks Dave, I'd already found those which would be handy but the files there won't go to a decent size without pixellating.  Those drawings must be in abook or magazine somewhere though...

    Will,
This link should help you out.It should take you direct to the plan ( it'll cost you 6 quid).
This is where all the copies of Aviation News are. Some are back issues and some are photo copies.
I have one but I'm not at home at the moment.

I guess it depends on how big the model is going to be. I have used some very small  drawings with success, but most of my models have less than an 8-inch wingspan. A Southampton solid model would be impressive in any scale. Just getting the motors to float between the wings on struts will be quite a feat.

Got mine on ebay for $6 (AUD).  Wingspan at 1/48 is 18.75 inches.

We had a couple for a while in Australia.

Will, I realize that this is not the plans that you enquired about but I have 3views of the Supermarine Walrus that you may be interested in - source unknown.

  Will,

I'm finally home for a couple of days. I will have a bash at scanning it but it will probably be several pages.

   Cheers

Will,
The Southampton II qualifies for the Long Distance Flights cookup.   Google: "Far East Flight" 1927     and check out this link: http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/view/1927/1927%20-%200810.html
