Hi all,
Still here though haven't done any proper solid models recently. I am using solid /balsa techniques to modify a plastic kit though, will put some details in after the competition its for.
I also got a phone call from a model RR friend just before Christmas, saying that the home of the chap I had some solids to restore from was being sold the next week so if I wanted any free books...I now have a second full set of Aircraft of the Fighting Powers, as well as Plans of Military Aircraft, and some other solids books! And a lot of Spitfire books (the old boy had worked on them in WW2). So I've no excuse on lack of information and inspiration! The family decided to keep a carved wood 1/72 Saro Princess flying boat as a momento of their father's/ grandfather's hobby and work at Saunders-Roe. Needless to say it was massive and a beautiful carving.

I wonder how many of us have a desk calendar with aircraft pictures.....It seems that I get distracted often, I was working on an Arrow when a picture of a Catalina appeared on the calendar. I started that, keel nicely done, wing looking good....then a picture of a Northrop N9M flying wing showed up....It's nearing completion now! nose wheel and props still missing, but only a couple of hours work left. Then I'll have to decide which unfinished project to work on next.
Unfortunately, Mexico beckons again, we leave tomorrow for a week. Gotta leave this cold and snow behind!

Lou, judging by the 10" span of the DVII in the collection's photos on the gallery I would think they must be 1/32, or possibly 1/36(?) if prewar.
Skybirds are 1/72, the biplanes would fit in your hand.

Noob here, just joined the site. Built a Strombecker V-tail Beech a couple years back and really enjoyed it. Downloaded the Boeing China Clipper plans and plan on starting soon. Don't anyone hold your breath! LOL, I am kind of a slow builder ;D

Here is a pic of my B&O solid model (best and only) to date.
It is a Strombecker V-Tail Beech I built a couple years ago. I found a complete kit less box for $20.00. It has some special meaning to me as my late older brother had one as a child in the late 50's and never built it.
It is painted with Randolph Aluminum dope and clear acrylic spray overall. I scanned the original decals and reprinted on clear decal paper as I was
afraid the original ones would crumble. I think it came out pretty good for a first solid model. Will be starting on the Comet Boeing China Clipper 1/72 scale recognition model soon.
Excellent job on the Bonanza. I look forward to the Clipper.

The wild fires are in a remote northern section of western Canada. Fort McMurray is an oil boom town in the middle of a forested area with little else around it. However, I am amazed at the fact that no one was harmed by the fire. Sadly we had two fatalities from a traffic accident on the way out of town. Other casualties are people who lost everything and others whose home were spared, but their employment eliminated. With mortgages still needing to be paid life will be very hard. Provincial and federal funds and generous donations from individuals will cover only a fraction of the cost of rebuilding not only their homes but their livelihood. I visited there in mid 1990 and found it to be clean and well laid out. A shame to see it now.

Like most every other Albertan male, I have done a short tour of duty in Fort Mac, though that was decades ago now. The fire was quite terrifying if the short clips I have seen on TV are any indication. It was a really close call for many motorists as they convoyed out. The town is really isolated, and with only one highway through, the 90,000 citizens had little choice when they were ordered to flee. Some were forced further north with no way out if the fire turned on them, I think that was about 20,000. The rest fled south to the safety of my home town of Edmonton. They have all been evacuated south now. My son Jimmy has a couple of the Fort Mac kids now in his class, as they try to figure out what to do.
The water bombers did an amazing job of spreading fire retardent and water on the critical infrastructure and the downtown core, it looks as though most of those areas escaped undamaged by the fire. The bad news is that around 2000 buildings and homes were lost, the good news is that 85% of the town is still standing. A Convair 580 crashed on landing but all the crew were safe. The air was full of smoke, helicopters and planes those first few days.
It was an amazing couple of days here, and now for the long slog as they wait for things to settle, then off to clean up and rebuild. They are a tough group of Canadians.
