Making a start 8)
Now that is back to basics. I have lots of trees, unfortunately they are still alive and well. Looking forward to seeing a ship on line. I may join you in April.
Loy
What scale is your Explorer?
Lou
PS
I could not wait. Drawings have been scaled to 1/350 which will gives a lenght of 39.21 cm or 12.43 in. Now printing is another matter as I have my hands full with other projects.
HI Lou, It's 50ft to the inch, it will be just under 9". I am going to use a bit of plastic as well as wood on this one and might add a bit more to the model than on the plan (might not, see how it gets on). I bought a DVD off Robert Wilson and it has a lot of good points in it and two nice plans. Have a look at his site www.miniatureships.blogspot.com think that will get you started, then move on to all the ships he has made.
ATB Marsh.
PS He has two DVDs I got the one How To Build Merchant Ships.
At 9" it come to 1/600 scale. That is a bit small for my fat fingers. I just browsed the link. It does make to blood run warm. Is there a comment somewhere on how he makes his water base? Regardless. He does excellent work. Are you making a full hull or a waterline model?
Lou
Lou, My model will be a waterline model. The sea on his models is plasticine, the painting of the sea is his wife's work.
Not sure what I will make my sea out of yet.
Marsh.
You really did make a remarkable start on your model, Marsh. Cutting down trees for wood makes one seem quite not with it when they resort to buying balsawood from the store. But plasticine used to make a fine reproduction of a seascape. Mind you that was years ago. Probably when that piece of wood was just a sapling. I did at one time make a ship in a bottle using plasticine for the sea. Worked out OK.
Cliff.
Cliff, Might go with plasticine, but will have to pinch it off the grankids :-[
The tree was a cherry tree (wish I had a bandsaw).
Marsh.
It's looks really good Marsh. You have taken it to a whole new level of scratch building.
Peter
Hi All, I have now cut two vertical slots through the forward end and stern and fitted to profiles of sheet brass, to keep the shape.
Marsh,
I ordered the steamship disk yesterday. If my wife asks why I order it. I'm going to say it's your fault and that your a bad influence on me. Seriously though, thanks it looks like it will be very helpful and the author seems like a nice chap too.
Peter
Peter sorry :D, but it's a good help with the ship models.
ATB Marsh.
Hi All, Up to this.
Great looking project.
Thank for the drawings.
Lou
Marsh, could you post a link to the photo to enable viewing at a larger size?

Hi Marsh. That really is an attractive photo. Makes one feel like "running away to sea" - or someplace anyway.
Cliff.
Hi Cliff, I went to sea a bit on a two day shift in one job I had (have had a lot of jobs, not much work in the NE of the UK ) + I had a small fishing boat I fitted out (21ft). Now not in the best of health and getting too old for the river Tyne (worked on it most of my life)
I have gone to sea on a lot of ships we built on the river but just for a few days at a time.
ATB Marsh.
Your work history is probably very interesting, Marsh. Would like to hear more about it sometime. I thought that I had had quite a few jobs but actually only a few. However, I for one, can definitely relate to your "Now not in the best of health and getting too old" bit. In fact it has suddenly occured to me: where are all the guys that used to provide so many interesting remarks concerning Solids on this site? But regardlles still think those photos you submitted were great - or maybe they were great for an old codger planning for the second time around. . . .
Cliff.
She is coming along nicely Marsh. I just received the CD in the mail this morning. It took over two weeks to arrive from the UK but its here now. The CD looks completely fascinating.
Peter
Everything is looking great so far Marsh. The case will really set it off.
Lou
Peter where do you live? I can tell you that the ship in your CD was built in a shipyad I worked in (in my home town at the time) for a long time, but not in 1936 :D
Lou I hope the case will keep the dust off (we will see).
ATB Marsh.
Hi Marsh,
I live in Vancouver on Canada's west coast. My Dad was born and raised in Liverpool and worked for PSNC and P&O. So I grew up surrounded by British shipping. My goal is to eventually build some of his favourite ships.
Peter
Hi Peter, Thanks for the info. That would be a good job to make some of the ships your dad was in (if you can get some plans)
I have told Lou that my brother was sent to Canada in the 2WW, he is 10 years older than me. He had to come home after the war but was never happy (he had so much in Canada).
ATB Marsh.
Now have 5mm Acrylic.

Hi, Up to this.

Looks great Marsh. I'd be interested to know how you made the seascape or if there is an online resource you followed.
Excellent case. Is the base that the ship sits on separate from the case?
Lou
Hi, The sea is plasticine with Humbrol enamel. The base is seprate. More work on the sea after this photo.

Just to see how it will look, funnel temp.
Marsh.
She is coming along nicely Marsh!
Peter
Thanks Peter.
Looks great.
The drawings show a flared bow but all photos show it with no flare-out at all. How did you do yours. I can't really see in the photos.
Lou
Lou, Flared, but it looked too much (not like the photo) so I took it in a bit. Hope it's a help.
ATB Marsh.
I followed the picture also. Are your hatches tinted a different colour or just awaiting paint? Marsh, please send me a close up of your mid deck area. The drawings are a bit different from the photos.
Lou
Lou, I just went with the plan for the mid deck area. A lot of parts just on loose to see how it will work out, made the life boats but not too happy with them (might re do). The hatches black as the plan, deck I have made gray (no info. on plan).
ATB Marsh.
I have not completely made up my mind yet, but my Explorer may well be one shade of grey to fit in with my ID flotilla.
Lou
Hi, New photo.
Excellent display of your modelling skills Marsh. I enlarged my screen 400% for a close up view of your ship. The detail is fantastic.
Lou
Very nice Marsh. Thanks for shareing.
Bigger Photos
Lou
Very suttle Lou. I hope Marsh gets the hint......
Lou, Not too good on the PC, better with steam
Very nice ship, Marsh. A beauty to behold! Also fine detail work.
Cliff.
Thanks all, a few more bits to do.
Marsh.
I think that's it.

Very nicely finished Marsh a model to be proud of! How closely did you follow the techniques from the CD?
Peter
Peter, Half with the model and all with the case.

Marsh, all your photos disappeared. I believe you may have change something in Imageshack. This occurred to me with Photobucket when I rearranged the albums. If you like, please send me the photos and I can go back and upload them to the post. As a minimum, send me a photo of the completed ship and I will add it to the end of the post.
