This may offer an explanation- http://www.flickr.com/photos/locos_loco_co/5020490256/ They look like those cardboard ID models that were produced for a while during the war, except they are not the typical black color.

Thats a work of art in itself,it must have taken a lot of effort to not only get the children to build them but whoever hoisted them into the air ! wonderful discovery,thank you.
