The dollar store sell various packs of paint brushes for a buck. These brush are totally useless for painting, but the handles are tapered making them perfect for a ship's mast. The light just came on when I was looking for a dowel to make the mast on the Wickes Class Destroyer.

What a brilliant idea Lou ! I will look at those cheap brushes in a new way now,by the way do not totally dismiss them, try this idea-
Take the brush and grip the ferrule lightly with the hairs standing vertically in a vice, next get some thin cyno and carefully dribble it around the base where the ferrule goes this effectively locks the loose bristles for good, with those white bristle type brushes you can use them for clear dope and discard them as it is not worth the thinners used sometimes,to soften the bristles simply loop a piece of wire around the wooden handle and dangle in water for 48 hours, result some cheap soft brushes ready for work.
Here you can buy packs of assorted brushes with aprox 24 items for  around a pound (£1) is shops called what else but '£ Shops' or even 99p shops have been noted !
