Title: 1/48 Brandenburg W-29 Commenced 26th April 2017 Completed 11 Oct 2017
Post by: Boomerang on June 05, 2017, 07:21:28 AM
Most of the bits have been cut out.

Stretched doped cotton thread is used to simulate the wing ribs . Several coats of primer ( cut back between coats) will be
applied. I did try cutting out a comb but... I gave up.

Propeller has been laminated but not shaped.

Some progress.

Floats have been painted to represent a varnished wood finish.
Struts made from wooden coffee stirrer cut to size and then profiled. Both ends of each strut have been drilled to accept small diameter brass rod.
Brass rod has been glued in the appropriate positions on the floats. Cross struts have been glued and float assembly held to cutting pad with blue tack.
The idea is to glue the struts to the rod and then use jigs to get the necessary angles.
Engine has been started. Cockpits have seats and homemade seat belts fitted.

Brass rod was soldered and then filed to a flat section for the gunners cockpit. The red piece is from Communications wire with the insulation left on for the the pilots cockpit coaming

Cheers

Some progress. Its a bit of "1 step forward and two steps  back".

I got some German Naval Lozenge decals and tried them out on the tail plane first.
Harrumph ! Brittle, Brittle and virtually came apart in my hands.
So I hit the remainder of that sheet and the other of the two with some decal bonder after scanning it.

The wing and aileron a done using the remainder of that sheet. It was still a bit brittle and even with micro sol/set it still parted company with the carrier film in places.
The aileron pattern should match up ( nearly does). A quick touch up with appropriate colours on the leading edge rectified it a little bit.
The tail plane is done using the scanned copy. Unfortunately the colours don't match and the lozenge is slightly over size. Still its home made and went on a dream.
There is a piece of lozenge camouflage between the gunners cockpit and the tail plane. I plan to use the homemade one for this.

I"ll wait a little while and summon the necessary good karma before using the other bought sheet to do the other wing.

The two bits of white plastic are from a take away coffee cup top. They will represent the side engine covers . The louvers have been done by cutting to length and then using a
bamboo skewer point on a bed of tissue pushing them out. The panels  are inclined inwards at the top. Rubbed them with the skewer and they just about match whats required .
The engine is built up using wire wrapped dowel for cylinders , bit balsa for the block and communication wire with insulation left on for piping. A radiator is in progress as well.

I've chosen "2670"as the one I'll do. It had a different engine to most of the others and was taken by the British for testing. hence the roundels above and below the wings.
later pics have it sea green overall with roundels.

The link says W33 but it ain't.

You are a talented man and brave to take on such a delicate finish. You seem to be doing quite well.

It all comes back to what you say occasionally ... "Satisfaction".
I saw a picture of 2670 and thought that's different.
The fact that the store bought decals broke down under pressure presented a challenge which was    overcome . I use whatever comes to hand eg coffee cup plastic . I guess it stems from when I was a kid. Had to make do with what you had
Everyone on here is talented .

Hopefully will get the other wing done soon.

Progress so far.

Managed to get the lozenge decal onto Starboard wing and aileron. Took some time but end result is ok.

Coffee cup top engine covers painted. The control column is at the front and is made from a press stud glued to a bit of brass rod.
All just propped up on floats not glued yet.
Homemade decals are an experiment using a different brand of paper. Its a white background so I'll test its opaqueness first.

Cheers

Testor's white decal film shows through a lot, so ofter I place two decals on top of each other for coverage.

That's what I've used in the past.
This stuff printed very easily. Colours came out OK.
It's a lot cheaper that the Testors and comes in A4 sheets. White or clear background.

Early days will experiment and see what the results are.

At the sake of giving away free advertising, what is the brand name. With some luck it may be available to me on line.

Lou

PS Did you get the Cobra Pub?

Haven't got Cobra pub yet.

I got my decal paper off dreaded eBay. Doesn't appear to have a brand name as such.
If you put in "water slide A4 decal paper "should bring up something.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CLEAR-WHITE-A4-INKJET-WATER-SLIDE-DECAL-PAPER-5-SHEET-8-3-x-11-7-W2-/132292673836?var=&hash=item1ecd42012c:m:mqiVCM2l1Iu3QJ2JvRH9eWQ

The link is for a seller on eBay in Winnipeg. 5 X A4 sheets for $9 bucks Canadian.

I've done some experimentation with mine. The white is a lot more opaque than Testors

Off to do some more fiddling with it.

Cheers

Results of experimentation.

White decal over Lozenge. Still not quite opaque. Roundel over white decal OK.
White cross on green . Not to bad but doubled up anyway.

  Update....

Just about everything done. I thought the easiest way would be to put it mostly together and then put the floats on.
Rather than waving it around with the floats attached.
Just sitting on floats. Couple of hand / foot holds to be added.

Cheers

Managed to get some time in.
Ended up pretty much waving it around with the floats attached putting remaining struttery on.
Went together pretty well and is relatively square.
Hand / Foot holds added. Ailerons attached.
Only really leaves the propeller to be attached.
Tossing up whether to put the bumpers on the floats and some ring attachments.

Have to go away for a couple of days so will get back in to it when I get back

Cheers
