Title: PRU Spitfire (1/72 scale)
Post by: Oceaneer99 on July 24, 2008, 06:32:23 AM
This model is a 1/72 scale Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IG, which was a photo-reconnaissance version of the Mk.I.  I used Navy ID model plans (from WW II) for the basic model, but more accurate drawings for some details, such as the radiator and oil cooler.

The plans may be found here:

After PRU pink paint, the model looks like this:

I drew up decals last night.  I haven't printed them, as I'm still doing some tweaks:

This evening, I painted the insides of the radiator and oil cooler intakes black.  I also painted the canopy (light blue for now; I may change my mind), and the exhaust stacks.

Don't slow down now, keep up the pace.

Nice work Garet,

I just completed a quick 1/72 ....plastic  :-[ .... PRU in blue late last winter.  Didn't think I'd share that with you all, but hey it's out there now.  You've already done a better job than I in that you've the proper side peeky outy canopy.  Great job.

Kenny, thank you for the comments.  The bubble part of the canopy was a real pain, for the record!  I shaped small pieces of wood, but then had to hollow out the back side to fit against the curved canopy.

Tonight, I applied most of the decals.  I ruined one of the "LY" decals, so I had to print another, so it'll be a day for the ink to dry before I can use it.

Here is the model as it is right now:

Nice job garet. Not having seen that roundel position before I researched and found another one just like yours. If you learrn something new every day it was a worthwhile day.

Yes, this Spitfire has decidedly nonstandard markings.  The illustration I found even showed slightly odd colors.  I copied them, but am not sure if that was just the artist's liberty, or the true colors.  In the end, they printed a bit darker than on-screen and are closer to the standard roundel colors.  I did read somewhere that there is disagreement over how pink these really were.  They were all repainted other colors by the end of the war.

Very nice job, Garet.
Those wing insignias really are wierd, aren't they. Never saw any like that before.
Cliff.
