Title: 1/72 Consolidated XBY-1 commenced 1 FEB 2017 Completed 26 Mar 2017
Post by: Boomerang on February 13, 2017, 08:59:50 PM
  I've started something in 1/72.

I thought I would post it as a "mystery" and see what the reaction is.

It is another one off from a plan I found in a 1930's  Air Trails magazine.
Crew was two and designed as a high level bomber .
  Developed from an existing design.

Built from the bits box. Fuselage/fin  is on a central core of 1/8th ply faced with balsa.
Tail plane is 1mm ply with corrugations (cardboard) added . The fin/rudder corrugations are metal ( had just enough left).
Cowling is from balsa dowel with 1/16 balsa wrapped around to get the right diameter.
Wheels are 1/8th ply faced with balsa. Undercarriage struts from bamboo coffee stirrer.
  Propeller from bamboo chopstick.
Cowling was cleaned out using a rotary tool and cylinders made from plastic tube from a cotton bud and painted.

More work required on finish. Undercarriage requires one more strut and a tailwheel.
Homemade decals have been prepared but not printed.

  Cheers
  Gordon

600 HP Wright Cyclone.

Developed from an existing design (wingspan increased) only one was built.

Was to be a carrier based bomber.

Did a search on the engine and came up dry. Wiki did not have the 600 HP Wright Cyclone version listed. A search of 1920/30 bombers did not fair any better. Only when I searched for between the wars carrier based bombers did I get the jackpot. That was fun. Thanks for the challenge.

Progress

Wing is attached. Canopy painted.
More work required on cowling and engine.
Tail wheel has been manufactured.

All that's left to do is attach tail wheel, engine and extra strut for landing gear.

Cheers

  Thank you Lou.

It does stand out. There are a few other American aircraft around this time that I'm interested in.

The pre-war chrome yellow wings are quite attractive.

Great looking model Gordon!!

I'm always impressed with how you are able to incorporate the "combing" effect to simulate ribbing. It certainly adds to the model. - ken

Haven't had much time to work on the Halifax's. But looks like I will have some time available. Will be posting some details on the engine casings shortly - ken
