Post by: FlyingS on August 28, 2020, 11:28:18 PM
It's been over a year and my new house is finished. In the process of setting up my model shop! Hope to get back on the DH 88 soon.

After 2 years of "other stuff" going on I'm back working on the De Havilland. Ready to start doing the finish work now.

Nice to see you back. Love the Comet. Do I see correctly that you will be adding undercarriage?

As I mentioned already, I am very happy to see your project being reactivated.

Looks very nice.  I need to get back to my solid project as well.  Thanks for inspiration.

I think that is the nice thing about wood. It has a lot of patience and doesn't mind an extended break.  Nice to see you back on the forum again.

I'm doing it with the landing gear up. I used a piece of a wooden wheel and split a piece of dowel and shaped the ends. I tried carving it into nacelle but didn't have enough meet nor did it look right. I think it's easier to do it in pieces and looks better. Was kind of at a mental Block on shaping the nacelles but I kind of had a brake through today and got off the stump haha.

Not exactly failed experiment. I bought the motor and chucks to turn engine cowls, nose cones, etc. What you see here was an attempt to make the nose light out of plastic. I glued several layers together and shaped a shaft and roughed out the nose light. Unfortunately I cut it off center which would have resulted in the nose piece being too small. But at least it proved out the concept. I'll probably at this point paint the nose silver.

I used a piece of acrylic curtain rod for my Comet. Turned and polished on a drill.

Cheers

Dremels work too for wheels and spinners on small planes.

First coat of paint. more finishing to do. I'm trying to stick with all water base finishing. Mainly because they are easier to clean up and I don't have a good space to do spray painting with the new house. I'm going to try doing how ever many color coats and sand in between and finish coat with water base polyurethane.

The Comet looks great.

PS I made a spray booth out of a moving carton and a brushless Vortex fan. Keeps overspray and odor away from the rest of the house.

I like it Lou. What you can do with an old door, 2x4s and cardboard boxes! 8)

Cleaver! What is the brand name? is it 4" or 6" vent? Didn't know there was such a thing.

It is a 4" but you can get as big as 12". Mine has 220 CFM and work really good. I have a VTX 400 seen herehttp://vortexpowerfans.com/vtx-400

I purchased through the USA as it was cheaper than ordering from Canada. Canada Post rates are ridiculous.

Finally after years in the making the Comet is finally finished!! My printer ink wouldn't print the red bright enough to mach the paint job. All the decals are heavier paper and used an Elmer's Glue stick to apply them. Then I covered it with 3 layers of clear gloss (water base) polyurethane. My first paper decals I used standard weight paper but I had to paint the backs with white paint to keep the color from showing through. I didn't have that problem with the heavier paper. The 3 coats of poly helped to blend the edges to the model. This is my 5th model and I learn something (or several) with each model.
