Title: 1/32 BAT FK 23
Post by: Boomerang on November 18, 2022, 10:47:15 PM

Started this some time ago.

Fuselage has been separated from the block and location dowels added.

will separate the halves and detail the insides.

I will paint this up as the replica in the Netherlands .

Challenge on this one will be the decals.

Pictures to follow.

Yet another aircraft to look forward to. Where do you find these unusual designs?

Both the BAT's have been on "the list" for some time.

I like to do the under done ones.

Cheers

Thank you Fraser.

Hopefully it won't take as long as the Flycatcher and Siskin.

Cheers

Managed to get a little bit done on this.

Wings have had the rib tapes applied. Clear doped linen base colour applied to bottom of wings and stabiliser.
Green applied to top surfaces. Yet to mask off bottom surfaces to do the shading.

The decals will present the challenge. Not insurmountable just time consuming.

Cheers

Slowly pushing on with this one.

Engine cylinders are presenting a bit of a challenge.

Slowly working through the decals.

Experimenting with some " moulded wet tissue " for the leather padding on the cockpit opening in the upper wing.

Picture to follow.

Where the BAT is at.

Basic bits are done. Need to split fuselage and create cockpit opening. That's what the bamboo pins are for.

The cockpit opening padding in the wing seems to be working.

Decals being played with.

When satisfied with the padding I will put the dihedral on the upper wing.

I rarely build a wing where I have to put the dihedral after carving it.  don't have a good track record in making a good joint.

Been a long time since I've added something to this one.
I've been quietly pottering away with this.
Cleaned things up .
Getting the fuselage a little bit better before splitting it and cutting out the cockpit.
Given up on making the cylinders for a while. Not happy with the results so far.
Made some wing struts from paired down bamboo skewers.

Cheers

Some projects just take a little longer.

Spent a bit of time lately on the BAT.

Bottom of wings have been done to represent clear doped linen.

Bottom wing registration done using stencil cut out from light tack painters tape.

Top wing done with base coat of white. Painters tape letters applied and resprayed with green.

The two and three I discovered were the wrong font ( checking photos yet again) basically redone freehand. Coat of satin on all surfaces. Bit of quality control yet.

Struts primed and cut .

Next step is separate the fuselage halves and do the cockpit.

Cheers

Gordon.

Looking good. Following the splitting and cockpit detailing with interest.

Thanks

Where things are at with the BAT.

 Taking a bit of time.

Splitting fuselage easily done . Had two dowel pins holding it together whilst shaping.

Cockpit details done ( with a bot of artistic license).

Bulkhead at the rear is just card.

The wing is attachment is two pins front and back. A bit of reinforcement required for rear pin.

Upper wing dihedral added . Padding for cockpit access added( method worked but execution not good).
Artistic license again used on instrument panel.
When it's all closed up you only have a 1/2 inch hole to peer into a little dark hole.

Next is some dremelling of some cooling holes in fuselage.

 Onwards.

 Cooling holes done.

Also some covers done using 3 layers of 80gsm paper with PVA. Using that a bit of "metal" fabrication
With a small bit of scrap balsa for reinforcement.
 Ping added to top wing.

 All clipped together. Relatively square.

Just leaves the engine cylinders and undercarriage legs.

Another fairing to be made which aligns with the notch in top wing.

Looking Great Gordon. I like the wing markings.

Managed to get some time yesterday and wound some thin wire around some small diameter dowel for
The engine cylinders. Surprisingly most turned out to be useable.

Now have to sort out some very small wobbly bits for the tops of the cylinders.

 Cheers

Good to see you are still at it. My bench has been empty for a few weeks. No Mo Jo!!

Wobbly bits make the model, I say.....

Lou, sometimes it is good to step back a bit to see what you have accomplished and you would have to take a pretty big step to take it all in.  Take a good breather!

The BAT has been relegated to when I get time. Will probably end up like the Flycatcher (long term).

It is always good to have a standby project. My Avro 504 is starting to feel the same.
