Title: Memoriam to his uncle - WO2 Jimmy Horne, WWII RCAF Observer
Post by: lastvautour on March 08, 2016, 07:49:09 PM
Our fellow modeler Kenny Horne has honoured his uncle Jimmy by writing a book called By Name Alone, assembling a replica
bicycle, and making a solid popular desk. Please visit the link below for additional details.

This is a quote from the link below.

Jimmy Horne signed up for enlistment with the Royal Canadian Air Force on December 31, 1941, three months shy of his 18th birthday. Trained as an Observer (later to be known as Navigator), WO2 Horne flew with the Royal Air Force and never came home. He was lost at age 20 on his twentieth operational flight when S for Sugar was shot down over Germany on April 27, 1944.

Hey Guys,

Nice to see everyone is well and that Solid Modelling still stirs in a few of us  :)  Thanks for the plug Lou.  The table in particular was more like a large scale Solid.  Restoring that 1940 CCM was more of the same detail work that I see on these pages.

Sorry it's been so long since I've been around.  I have started a new project though I'm a little shy of mentioning anything as you are all aware of my excitement in starting projects, and my difficulty in finishing...  I've been taking a couple of pics during preliminary stages and it struck me that I haven't built a model since I got my cel phone.  OK so I was a late adopter, but still it's been over 5 years.  If anything comes of this I'll post some pics.

Take care all,

Kenny

Hey Gang,

Started on my Lancaster.  Using the old ID plans and a lovely chunk of fir I rescued from an old pallet... Maybe not the wisest material choice.   Rough image of roughing out stage.

Nothing complete yet.  Each part still has work needed, but coming along.  :)  Hardly looks any different that the last photo.  You'll have to take my word that hours of work have occurred in the mean time  :-\

Thanks Lou,

A little tip, I make center lines on everything.  In this case I lock a sharp pencil into my fingers and use it to make parallel lines around the edge of the rudder.  I make similar lines around the fuselage as well, just to I have registration lines to work towards.  In the case of the center lines, I'm pretty religious about not touching them until the final smooth sanding.  As long as I can still see them, I know that I have not gone too far.  For the fuselage and engine nacelles, I glued two blocks together so that I can use the glue line as a permanent center line.  In this case I even used a big green marker before I glued, so now I can see a thin green line no matter what.

Getting there...  Still to come, engine details and the never ending putty-primer-sand loop and tail wheel.  Having a great time with it though.  A lot of parts to line up and keep square...

I usually make mine out of a dowel and then spit them lengthwise to get two. I also usually require a few attempts before getting it right. You are going quite well so far.

Hi Lou et al.

I'm using Vallejo acrylics for the first time.  They are available at my LHS and like the idea of trying water based and that they are so easy to thin and hand brush.  I ended up kinda mixing my own colours after spending many frustrating hours trying to find a great representation of RAF Dark Green/Dark Earth.  Probably one more DG/DE coat to go before the black.

You wouldn't think that these most used of colours would be that tricky.  Man there are a lot of opinions out there.  Truth is though that it is very subjective and variable.  Even my model in photos taken outside in the bright sunshine and in shadow look very different.  It's like they are two different models.  I looked at book photos I have of the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Lanc and tried to match from these, but again, lighting in different photos / print process made the colours look very different.  Anyway, I just went ahead.

The detail shot is my fave as it gives a glimpse into the material  :)

Looks pretty good to me. I use either Model Master or Tamiya acrylics but thinned with rubbing alcohol. You can use water for brushing but spaying does not work well with water. I use an Aztec that was about $30.00 some twenty years ago. As to colour fidelity, although both have RAF Dark Green, they are different.

Hi Kenny:

Looks like your faith was well placed. The paint seems to have covered uniformly based upon your last picture. No doubt you had a couple of "What have I done?" moments.

I've been following you build with great interest as I am looking to start some Halifax models which are similar in nature to the Lancaster. I have a couple of questions for you.  How did you join the 3 parts of the wings? And which tool do you use to "burn" the control surfaces?

Thanks in advance for your assistance - ken

Hi Guys thanks for the encouragement,

Ya, the paint is going down fine, whew  ;)  The first pic is with a bit of Future gloss coat to see what that would look like.  Ken, I use a Walnut Grove branded woodburner that I suspect that I got at a rather generic craft store like Michaels  or some such place.  It's nothing special but it does have an off/on switch that is handy.  It's got a large brass wedge on the dangerous end, kinda like a soldering iron.  I have seen them with exacto/scalpel type blades which would be great for finer details, but I've never found the immediate need for it.

Masking and painting black is on the agenda for today

Canopy day.  I did the rear and ball turret first then decided that the main canopy was complex enough to deserve a photo shoot.  I've gotta say that symmetry is a tough mistress  >:(

The final result is much the same as the turrets.  There is some bleed through that I probably could avoided with a bit better prep work, but the fix-up wasn't too difficult.

Kinda screwed up the top (escape hatch) part.  Got my positive and negative bits messed up...  May try and fix it tomorrow.

I am hoping to make a small diorama with this one.  The CF-101 is a bit of an inspiration to the whole deal and as I'm imagining a nice day for a setting, I picked the skyblue for the canopy

Thanks Lou,
Sorry if I wasn't too clear in my last post.  I plan on doing a Lancaster diorama using the Voodoo-on-the-pedestal as an inspiration.  My son and I were at the museum Easter monday and as he was looking up at the Voodoo I thought that a similar setting would be neat.  There are a few small towns in Alberta with Sabers and Shooting Stars on pedestals in the town centre.  I thought I'd imagine one with a Lanc.  Anyway, the light blue fill on the canopy was chosen because of the lovely sky on that day.

The Voodoo would make a great solid though.  I seem to recall one in your folder...

She is a beauty. Bill from CanMilAir will change the serial number and code letters on any decal sheet to suit your needs. Check out his Lancaster decals at http://www.canmilair.com/products.asp?cat=57

I read your post and links but could not find the serial number except for the S for Sugar which could have been assigned to several squadrons. Do you have the serial number for "S" ?

Hey guys, thanks for the kind words.

Lou, that picture of PG-S is actually an exact twin to the aircraft my uncle was lost in.  PG was the code for RAF 619 squadron, and that picture was taken while my uncle was was on strength with them.  This particular PG-S was lost upon landing the morning after the disastrous Nuremberg raid (the RAF lost more aircrew that night than during the entire Battle of Britain).  The squadron received a brand new S and that ship was given to my uncle's crew as a bit of a reward for being one of the more veteran crews at 19 operations under their belt.  It was on their first operation with their shiny new Lancaster that they were shot down by Obst. Martin Becker on their way to Schweinfurt, 26 April 1944.

When I first saw that photo it took my breath away as I did not yet know the story, so there was a chance that it was my uncle's plane.  As it turns out it's still pretty cool!

The model will be of his first operational Lancaster, PG-F. Their first op was to, of all places, Berlin.  They made it, though not without being hit in the bomb bay with flak, their only flak hit of the war.  The next night they were again on the Ops board and again off to Berlin, two trips to the most dangerous target in Germany in just over 24 hours.  It's amazing what youth and adrenaline can accomplish.

As for decals I am ordering a set of assorted letters from Hannants, though they are on back order and may take a while...  I still have the base/diorama to build so I am in no great rush.

Take care everyone.  I'll keep you in the loop as the rest of this comes together.

Hi Lou,

PG-F was ME568, lost in August 3/4 1944 over France with 448 hours on the airframe. Jimmy's PG-S was LL904 lost on its first operation with only 22 hours on the airframe.  The one in your picture, and I suspect the painting is a depiction of it's final minutes, was LM418, lost 31 March 1944.  PG-P DV326 was my uncle's regular a/c. They flew 14 ops with her.  DV326 survived the war, serving with a Lancaster training squadron once her operational days were done.

Beautiful shots Lou,

To be able to get up so close and personal to such great aircraft is such an honour.  What is the story behind LQ-J?  The background shows an interesting bunch of other great CAF planes.

All the best,
Kenny

ps,
My diorama is slowly getting along.  I have purchased (white metal from England OO scale railroad characters) and have painted them.  Waiting for replacement decals from Hannants for the Lancaster.  About to build the pedestal and the wooden base, though not quite sure of the final details so have been dragging my feet a bit...

Progress shots.

The foam model is a bit of a mock up of the scene.  The push pins represent people, the block is the stone information plaque/stand/thingie.   There will be a family of three, the stone, a park bench and an airman and his bike.  The poor woman appears sightless, though I assure you she closed her eyes lest I get paint in them :-)  1/72 people are VERY small...

Avro Lancaster III (JB226 LQ-G) on a mission to Ludwigshafen on 1943-11-18

On Wednesday, 17 November 1943, (a part of) the aircraft of the 405 squadron (RCAF), took off for a mission to Ludwigshafen in Germany from a station (airfield) in or near Gransden Lodge.
One of the crew members was Flight Sergeant R H Larson RCAF. He departed for his mission at 17:30.
He flew with a Avro Lancaster (type III, with serial JB226 and code LQ-G). His mission and of the other crew members was planned for Thursday, 18 November 1943.

The aircraft was lost on that mission.

The mock-up shows this will be a very effective piece of art.  I look forward to seeing the finished work.

Thanks too for your old time airplane magazine website.  Coming across the prototype Spitfire article led me to SMM and revived an interest in occasionally building models in a different  way to plastic.
