Title: A pair of Mustangs
Post by: 1.JaVA_LGorrit on March 13, 2014, 10:59:51 AM
Hi all,

I was visiting a friend last Sunday.
He is a (tobacco) pipemaker and he has all this woodtypes in his garage.

After seeing my Mossie model, he gave me a piece of Paulownia wood and told me to try it.

This is the start of my new project.
it is just enough to make 2 nice little P-51B's.

I printed the plans and started chipping yesterday.
What a delight to work with this wood type.

Jorritt well done ! Paulownia was used by the 1936 kit manufacturers in America to make propellers for rubber driven flying model kits,it looks very similar to Jelutong ?close grained and lovely to cut to shape, carve and sand, two nice projects there as well.

Hi Lou,

They are lying on a shelf in an old tobacco tin:

I suffer from a case of carve-anxiety... In short, it comes down to the fact that I am afraid to carve too much off..
Plus I have no idea how to attach the mainwing to the fuselage.
In the instructions it says I should fit it in , but I just don't see how I could manage.
What do you suggest?
Should I cut the fuselage just like I did with the Mossie and cut parts of the middle wing section?
I am really lost and don't know how to proceed.

Thanks.

Jorrit

The wings are cut similar to the Mossie, however the bottom of the wing will also be the bottom of the fuselage. I normally cut just ahead of the radiator intake. I am in the process of doing a Mustang myself, so I will post photos of the wing attachment.

I have started a P-51 build and will post photos as I get them.  I found the method in the instruction to be too hard for me so i use the same method as the Mossie.

Hi Lou,

Grabbing back to your post of the RNLAF Mustang D variant, I was able to figure out how to connect the wing to the fuselage.
Indeed the same method as used with the Mossie before.

Thank you.

I am making some serious progress finally:

Thank you, Cliff!
It's only my second solid model, and it's far from perfect.
But at least I am having fun and learning lessons each time.

Thanks guys.

@Lou,
I am waiting the 2nd P-51.
Currently working on another Mosquito.
Somebody wanted to buy my first Mosquito model, I explained him that he could not afford it.

Instead I am making him one now.

When this is done, I will make a P-51D from the left over Paulownia wood.

I have done that on occasion as selling the first usually has to much sentimental attachment to it.

Lou
PS don't forget photos photos photos. Quite often I will see faults in the photo that I have missed looking straight it.
