Title: SPAD-VII
Post by: Jim on June 16, 2020, 02:19:24 AM
Just finished the SPAD-VII.  In the markings of Escadrille Spa. 48. About 1:50 scale. Standard construction: basswood fuse and wings, birch plywood undercarriage legs and prop carved from 1/4-in. thick purpleheart. Tape ribs, painted fishing line and banjo strings for rigging. O-ring tires. Laser printer decals. Acrylic paint.

great looking model. How was the purple-heart to carve?

Bit on the stringy side, but really not much worse than walnut. All those "exotic" woods are a little sketchy at times.

Interesting. I have a bit of purple heart that I was going to use for details on small items, but I did not consider it for carving. Thanks.
