Title: 1/144 Canadair/Convair CC-109 Cosmopolitan..............(Completed 9 April 2014)
Post by: lastvautour on February 22, 2014, 05:11:29 PM
Decals have been ordered from CanMilAir and drawings have been printed. Wood selection should be done within a few days and then let the chips fly.

Lou

Notes:

The Canadair version CL-66 did not fair as well as the Convair versions.

I had the just one flight in the Cosmo and did not like the rearward facing seat this particular aircraft had.

The Convair 340/440 (USAF C-131 Samaritan) had piston engines while the Canadair CL-66 (RCAF CC-109 Cosmopolitan) turboprops. On several occasions some of our Cosmos were mistaken for the USAF Samaritans and avgas was pumped into our tanks. Although our Allison engine would burn avgas, it would put lead deposits on our turbines and required extensive maintenance to remedy the problem. The Convairliner was used as a basis for a tin plate toy airplane I received as boy in the mid 1950s so my attraction goes back a long time.

I love these little stories Lou that bring our models to life in history, just visualising all of that Avgas going into the tanks !

CanMilAir decals arrived today so I had better put some priority on the build. Normally I only order after the models are done.

Some contour carving and a paper cockpit window. It will be removed and replaced with the store bought decal in due course.

Thanks Barry. None of the drawings really show the engine shape so photos and the old Mk I eyeball will have to do.

The port engine is carved and test fitted to the wing. The vertical fin is glued and the horizontal plane is puttied and sanded. Progress is being made.

Finally remembered I had some CC-109 photos. They were taken with a cheap camera and without flash on a dark and stormy afternoon. The images are quite grainy but useable for my purposes. I am guessing early 1990s. I had to scan them as they are pre-digital.

Very useful never the less Lou,they show all of the nacelle detail needed for your model.

Had to rework the bottom of the nacelles. The tail is puttied and sanded with a bit of primer added. Some final sanding should tidy things up.

Nacelles have been reworked and propellers manufactured using individual blade glued to the spinner.(photo to follow) The wing filets are in production and the second attempt will be done this weekend.

If i may ask, have you a spare copy of the plans for this great looking plane that you could scan and place in the gallery?
if i did a bit of digging around i could probably find something usable but I'm just being my usual lazy self! ;D
thanks, Biggles

I am unable to post the drawings as I don't know the copyright issue with them. We must take care not to infringe on copyrights in our gallery.  Regardless here are some sites for you to check out.

Really good drawings but needs to be downloaded and cut and paste together. Scroll down a bit to find them.

I briefly contemplated drill out the nacelles to place lead weights to balance but elected just to use a straight pin like the remaining models in the 1/144 collection. The Bonnie is the same scale. I assume the USN landed C-131 on their carriers.

Very good wheels for your model, Lou. Sometime  maybe you could elaborate on just how you built the center portions. I know that I've tried in the past (see e.g. my Black Widow) but only with modest success.

The wheel hub is made in MS word using basic shapes but created around 3" /7.5 cm in diameter. Once reduced in size it turn out pretty good. I will make a tutorial in tips and technique later this week as it is my bedtime.

Thank you Paul. I really enjoyed this one as I flew in one. On another occasion I was tasked to supply a DC power unit to a visiting  Cosmo. I screwed up and received a chewing out by the Sergeant.
