Title: 2017 COOK UP - PROFILE
Post by: lastvautour on September 07, 2017, 07:36:15 PM
I AM USING CAPS TO ILLUSTRATE THAT I AM SHOUTING.

LETS HAVE A PROFILE COOK UP LIKE JORRIT'S AND GARET'S PROFILE MODELS.
(http://smm.solidmodelmemories.net/Gallery/albums/userpics/10080/normal_2014092202~0.JPG)(http://smm.solidmodelmemories.net/Gallery/albums/userpics/normal_TutorTop_s.JPG)

RULES ARE SIMPLE

1. FUSELAGE AND WINGS MUST BE SINGLE THICKNESS SIDE OR SIDE/TOP PROFILE AS PER PHOTOS
2. INTAKES LIKE THE TOMCAT OR TORNADO MAY HAVE LAMINATED PROFILES
3. UNDERCARRIAGE OPTIONAL HOWEVER, MUST BE PROFILE ALSO
4. ALL PARTS MUST BE SAME THICKNESS.
5. CONTOURING IS LIMITED TO ROUNDING OFF THE EDGES AS PER THE PHOTOS
6. MARKINGS & PAINTS OPTIONAL
7. STANDARD OR BOX SCALE
8. MUST BE WOOD PRODUCTS INCLUDING PLYWOOD, PRESS-WOOD, CARDBOARD
9. DEAD LINE 24 DEC 2017 (Dead line for initial batch as cook-ups never close)

I have chosen to do a Seahawk like Jorrit. This image is a link to "The-Blueprint" web site.

These may or may not be the colour scheme I will choose, but it is attractive.

Lou
PS there may be more as I have a good stock of 3/8 inch wood.

Jorrit, did you compensate for the thinner fuselage? Garet's compensated by making a top cross section of the fuselage.  Your wings do not look out of scale. Please advise your method. My first profile will be the Sea Hawk.

Jorrit responded by email:

Hey Lou,
I have always used the outlinings of the 3views of aircraft. Full wingspan no compensation. In some cases I have prolonged the wing to fit to the fuselage.
It really depends on the model

Not wanting to get behind the eight ball, here are 4 models I will make at once and maybe make a mobile. Sea Hawk will be first. Missing is the Buckeye. All are naval aircraft and have mid-wings.

Hi guys.
There is a long time since a post my last message.
I hope you're well.
I would like to participate with a T-27 Tucano profile.
Here is the 3 view drawing:

Best regards,
Marcos.

First installment in making the Sea Hawk. I measured the center line of the fuselage to the wing root and removed all but 1/18 inch on either side of center line. Now the wings are still to scale but now shorter overall due to the now 1/4 inch thick fuselage. The sea Hawk in 1/72 minimal. I hear that term from Cliff who made allowances to scale building to the betterment of his workmanship.

Lou

Welcome Jorrit and Marcos to the group build.

I offer tutorial service for any new member wishing to join in the profile cook-up. I will even do it just using my paring knife, which is a match for the one I used to borrow from my mom and catch hell when she tried to peel potatoes with a dull knife.

Yes indeed. All rules are suggestive in nature. HOWEVER if you post something new, you know I will have to make room on my bench. As it stands today I have 5 profiles, 2 Spitfires, 1 Mustang, 1 Sabre, I T2 Tanker, 1 Bruno Stillman Fishing boat and a toy biplane all being worked on. Oh, I forgot, an ORCA patrol/training ship. What is one more?

Please post all details with lots of photos.

Since mid-wing aircraft are particularly good subjects for profiles, I found this link:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Mid-wing_aircraft (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Mid-wing_aircraft)

Note that it is possible to do other types of planes in profile. I have made a number of X-planes and two different PBY Catalina models.

Some progress during the Sunday Market with an F-94C and a Fiat G-91.

The remaining planes have not been touched but I found some Frecce Tricolori decals so my camera nose Gina was quickly modofied to the pointy nose and the wings have been primed and ready for the green, white & red wing bottom.

Some times we must take a step back.
1. Select your subject and print to the size you want. Glue the plan to the wood or make a template and draw it on. In this case I opted for gluing.
2. Now cut out the parts and sand to the paper plan.
3. Use a drill or rotate a sharp blade(#11 works great) and make two hole at the front and rear of the wing slot. Remove the wood to make a slot for the wing. If a low wing or high wing, just make a cutout.

Happy profiling

All cook-ups are open to all. I will send you an Excel scale calculator where all you need to do is enter the dimensions in inches and the calculator gives you 1/32, 1/48, 1/72 and 1/144. Are you familiar with the Microsoft Excel program? I have attached an image of the P-40 scale numbers for you as we cannot upload excel files.

Profiles are simple to do and I was hoping more would join in. Now that I have the first one done, I think if there is another cook-up my selections will be Garet scale with side and top. I didnot choose them this tie due to the extra complexity.

Thank you Gordon. That new decal film works way better than anything else I have ever used. Thanks again for the link. Note the area behind the cockpit is discoloured. I took reference from a profile drawing that showed a rear glass area on the side view but not on the top view Of course I did not realize the error until I had completed the paint job. I have since learned that Tamiya, Model Master acrylic and Model Master enamel Dark Sea Greys are NOT the same colour. In future I will put the other two back on the shelf and only have the one that I am using on the bench.

I just remembered we have an excellent resource for profile planes at http://smm.solidmodelmemories.net/Gallery/index.php?cat=13
Our gallery contains 90 drawing of various WWII aircraft. Just ignore the contours and make all pieces from thinned down wood. I used 1/4 inch pine but if we have another cook up I will use 3/16 and do the Garet Scale method.

I found an old sheet of 1/8 "  MDF ( Medium Density Fibreboard) . Scratched the head for a bit.

Remembered where I had some drawings of the Yak 15 and Supermarine Swift ( then I found there already was one in the cook up but decided to press on). A few hours later and I have a 1/48 Yak 15 and a 1/72 Swift cut out. Tomorrow I'll see about sticking them together.

Larry, the markings are totally up to you.
I have painted the markings by hand with many failures as one needs a steady hand.
I have used white paper with white glue and a touch up with super glue when the edges lift.
I use peel and stick label paper to mixed success and on rare occasion still needed a bit of super glue here and there.
I have used plastic model decal spares box.
I now print my own decals on decal film but that is great debate all on its own..

I personally aim for a reasonable facsimile rather than perfections. I know I can't attain those super finishes and I am quite happy with what I call ID + level of completion. (ID + is correct dimensions but low on fine details) It works for me and I am completely satisfied with my projects. I applaud those who can do that professional finish and on rare occasion I surpass my ID + level.

To make a long story short, I do what pleases me and all modelers should find there personal level of comfort.

Probably some sort of Lexan derivative. I recycled a small piece from what I'd call "bird Deflector".
I've seen it over here used on guttering to stop pigeons .
I first used it for the formation/Nav lights on the Beaufort.

The yak decals turned out ok. Printed on white and deftly cut out . Red doesn't show through that much.

The Swift roundels were printed on white and went on and over the aluminium OK. The black are on "proprietry " clear and were a bit of trouble. There should be red and white checks on the wing tips but I decided I didn't need the frustration.

Another impressive set of models. I think your squadron shows how painting complements and enhances the form of the model.

I have to ask the obvious question. How do you continue to find the space to store all your creations? Past pictures you have previously posted of your collection clearly show you have a large number of models.
