Title: 2014 Year End Quicky Build
Post by: lastvautour on December 03, 2014, 11:13:48 AM
This post will be merged to the WWII ID Model builds on completion of the project. Here is my choice. The Defiant flew with RCAF 410 Squadron during WWII. The model will be built using recycled wood from my neighbours kitchen renovations.

I have selected two possible schemes, both 410 Sqn from Wings Palette at http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww2/f/570/101

I'll have a bash at a Skua. This may turn into a Roc.
I've managed to print a useable drawing to 1/72 .

Bolton Paul Defiant templates cut, wood selected and major pieces outlined. Recycle wood appears to be ash.

Two Defiant parts are cut away from the board but only one fuselage has block form. The to do list just added two Victorian lamp posts from some old plywood. They on the other hand have been cut, sanded and have received their first coat of paint. Later this afternoon is a kitchen party I just have to attend, so no additional work on the models.

Between painting the two Victorian lamp posts and going out I managed to block cut the major parts.

Skua up to primer stage. Roc not far behind. Turret and sliding panels being worked on.
Pictures to follow.
At this stage both will be silver. have to make some decals before I leave .

  It looks like a Skua.
Have yet to cut back white primer coat. Propeller is  black plastic from an empty ice ceream container.
blades heted ( safely) over a stove element and given a twist with pliers.
Cowling block cleaned out with rotary tool . Smeared with a bit of wood glue ,allowed to set slightly and the scraped with a
  file to look like cylinders.
Roc is progressing. Set of roundels produced.

Cheers

I like seeing the Defiant take shape.  Years ago, I spent a few weeks enlarging drawings by hand for the Defiant in order to design a balsa and tissue model.  I never built the model, but got to know the lines of the plane pretty well.

Got a coat of silver on the Skua. Revealed some minor surface imperfections. Cut back and will reapply tomorrow if time
permits. Roc progressing.

Garet, the Defiant revealed quite a few lines I did not realize by looking at photos. The rear deck as well as the canopy just ahead of the turret were surprising. I am about ready to complete sanding on number one and just glued the wings on number two. I used the same method as the Spitfire filet, using the finger full of wood filler and gently smooth it out. Christmas is just around the corner so my hobby time is being cut short with shopping and visits to and from friends. I still plan on completing these by year's end.

Looks great Gordon. Is there a particular Squadron or are the markings generic?

410 Squadron RCAF Defiant painted and decals printed. Still need a tail wheel and prop disc.
2 Squadron RAF Defiant upper surfaces painted and still needs sly to be applied to the bottom surfaces. Decals printed. Require prop disc.

Title: Re: 2014 Year End Quicky Build
Post by: Boomerang on December 22, 2014, 12:43:46 AM

  Its L2933 /K 800 SQN FAA . HMS ARK ROYAL 1939.
The red breaks up the silver.

I might have to copy your decals for future use.

The Roc will be L3084 - All silver
The RAAF had Defiants for a short period in England- 456 SQN

Roc stuck together just got to squeeze some time in between work and everything else to finish it off

Was there ever a Vultee Vengeance  in the ID series?

there is no Vengeance in the ID section. Te only  thing we have is (http://smm.solidmodelmemories.net/Gallery/albums/userpics/10257/normal_Vultee_Vengeance.jpg) If you google it I am sure you will get some decent drawings.

Very nice Skua and Defiant gentlemen.  Thanks for sharing your builds.  I hope to get back into "solid" mode a bit in the new year.  Building a peanut scale flying model at the moment.
Merry Christmas.

Thank you Paul and Mark.

The second Defiant is done. It belongs to No 2 Squadron RAF. Defiant F Mk I, N1572/KO-I, Clifton, September 1940. That makes a total of thirty 1/72 WWII ID Plus models in my collection.

Blackburn  Roc Finished.
Turret is "relocatable " not rotatable and guns are fixed at that angle.
Propeller from "black" plastic ice cream container. Spinner from an already rounded bamboo chopstick.
Home made decals for both the Skua and the ROC
Painted as L3084.
Used as a trials aircraft and as a floatplane too( there's something for the future).
It was last seen as an engine test rig in August 1945.

Can I suggest that the Helldiver be kept on the list if a quicky build is done in the future.

Enjoyed it .

Some pictures

  Cheers

This was fun Gordon including doing the two models at once. So 1 Dec 2015, we should have another "Year End Quickie" and hopefully get more members joining in.

At this time you are ringing in the New Year and the Sydney Bridge is about to be lit up. Best wishes for a healthy and prosperous New Year.
