Title: 1/48 Aeronca C3 Master Dec'35 MAN-Commenced 26/10/15 Completed 6/3/16
Post by: Boomerang on November 01, 2015, 05:16:32 AM
I have been thinking of this for a while.

Whilst waiting for paint to dry etc I've managed to get this far.

Cheers

My Heath Robinson jig to make life a bit easier and the job a bit quicker.

Pre stretched and doped cotton thread aligned with pencil lines and then doped.

Tail plane has now had three coats of primer each side. Yet to be cut back.

Cheers

Wing has been given the same treatment to put in the rib lines.

The port wing was done with a brush and thinned dope. Better finish. Starboard wing hit with the thinned dope which cleaned
up the heavily applied dope ( done with a pointy stick and a quivering hand.
Three coats of primer applied. Yet to be sanded.

As I'm going to this as G-AEFT which was a C100 without corrugated ailerons I've turned up some balloon wheels using dowel
in and electric drill. Result Number 3 and 4 will be used.
Pic to follow.

That's her. I built but did not get to fly an RC model years ago. ( It's still hanging from the ceiling)
I've got to dig out the info I collected back then.
Particularly to knock up some home made decals.

Looking great Gordon!!

The ribs certainly look very realistic. I'll have to try the string approach on an upcoming model. I've been struggling with what to use to simulate ribs,  but I think for the larger scale models I'll just have to use a thicker string. I'm not a fan of dope due to the fumes, but may try using fabric glue. I used fabric glue on some model boat rope ladders over 40 years ago, and the strings are still glued together. Hopefully, it'll attach string to wood.

Thanks Paul and Lou.

Ken
I try to keep the use of dope to a minimum and when I do its usuaally in a well ventilated area.

Hadn't thought of fabric glue. Might experiment with that next time.

You could look at strips of paper for ribs/tapes. On My Flycatcher and  DH 5 I used 1/16th white board margin tape. Worked OK.

Thanks Gordon for the alternate option. I'll have to try both options on a scrap tail. I guess I could also use thin strips of paper, depending on the scale.

Dare I say, "more experimentation" - ken

Decided to build it this way as the bamboo chopstick makes a good handle.

Cylinders are thin copper wire wrapped around a bamboo skewer.

  Progress on the engine.

  "AEFT"had a JAP engine.

Exhaust is from telecom jumper wire ( picked up from a distribution pillar at the end of my street) . That's the white bit.
The black bit is a piece of garden tie.

  Progress so far.

Lemon Yellow from a spray can.

Wheel hubs are made from two part epoxy . Used a round head pin to get the shape in a bit of BLU Tac with a thin smear of olive oil as a
release agent and two part epoxy. Worked OK for me.
Still have to make the upper bracing pylon. I've got that worked out in my head.
Decals for registration letters have been made. Still have to sort out the Stripes and the Aeronca logo

  Cheers

Progress so far.

Couple of coats of Spray enamel on fuselage ( complete with finger marks).

The exhaust is not in the picture but has been completed.

It's just "clipped ' together at the moment.

More work required generally.

The blue headed dressmakers pin is non scale. :)

I've made up the tail skid out some small diameter brass tube .
That's pretty much the making side finished.

No comes the glue together part.

  Bit of inspiration.

  Nearly but not quite.

Engine and undercarriage won't be attached until all the rigging has been done.

Home made decals turned out OK.

just need to do the rigging . Make a spinner and do the last lot of glueing.

  Not rushing.

Thank you Lou and Ken.

Pausing for a wee breath before tackling the rest of the rigging. The "rods "on the upper and lower of the wing require some thought.
Pretty chuffed with it so far.
