A new project started yesterday. The drawings have been size but needs assembly as the model drawing is too large for my printer paper. I once printed an 8.5 X 22 image but cannot repeat the process for some unknown reason. Beyond my limited computer skills. Regardless, this one will be painted as a 434 Bluenose Squadron bird.
Lou
Wood has been cut into blocks. Dream stage is great and so full of promiss.
Lou
Note the CF-5B is 1/24 scale.
Lou
Rough carving fuselage.
Lou
Block shape has been attained. Contour carving to start shortly.
Lou
I think I can say in all sincerity that it looks very nicely done to this stage.
Cliff.
Great progress Lou, there are quite a lot of contour changes to this one. Regards Paul J.
I will be taking it slow. This will be my third F-5 solid. The other two are 1/24 scale. One you see in the above photo and the other, a single seat version remained in Ottawa back in 1988. Wow putting it in print makes it sound so long ago. 25 Years!! Thanks for the vote of confidence.
Lou
I don't know if you are the same, but since retirement time just flies by, I am into my 5th year, ( although still in my late 50s ) and it's nearly March already!!!. Where does it go !!!!. Regards Paul J.
Contour shaping has begun. Carving the dropped leading edge and wing as one piece proved a problem. I am attenpting to move forward on all fronts so yesterday and today are dedicated to the CF-5A.
Lou
Another lovely model Lou,very well planned sequences.
Congratulations on a lovely model.
Barry.
Thank you Barry. I hope to see some of yours in the near future.
Lou
You certainly will Lou,projects buzzing around in my mind.
Barry.
Primed and ready for paint as soon as my buddy tell me what colour scheme he wants.
Lou
Looking good Lou, can't wait for the finished colour scheme. Regards Paul J.
I am building it for a friend. This will be the last build for someone else other than me for the forseeable future. I enjoyed it, but pressure to get it right is always there.
Lou
Here is a better photo. Photography is not my strong suit.
Lou
That one certainly shows all the coutour changes. Well made Lou.Regards Paul J.
Thank you Paul.
Lou
Lou, if photography isn't your strong suit perhaps you should reconsider that description because your F5 sure looks a lot like the F5 mounted on a pedestal on Ness Ave.
Cliff.
What scheme is the Ness Ave CF-5A?
Lou
Very impressive Lou.
Thank you Barry.
LOu
Maybe I'll try to send you a photo of the CF-5 - or at least a description. Thought you'd maybe be familiar with that aircraft. In brief, as I recall it's standard camouflage on top with grey on the underside. Exactly what squadron or other markings I don't presently recall.
Cliff.
I am once again reminded why I don't build for others. My friend showed me the photo of the paint scheme and guess what? It is dual. He never mentioned that when he was shown the CF-5A drawings and the built up model prior to painting. New pieces have been cut and things are proceeding. I am also converting my old CF-5B to the paint scheme he wants. If the paint job works out I will give him the 1/24 scale one and I will keep both the CF-5A and CF-5B in 1/32 for my collection. CF-5B photos attached for your viewing.
Lou
You'll certainly be expert on CF-5's Lou, what c/s did he want?. Regards Paul J.
He wanted the desert lizard scheme.
Great aggressor scheme, lots of wavy lines to paint. Regards Paul J.
At different times the tip tanks were camouflaged as well.
Lou
Moving along nicely. I have decided to pass on my 1/24 scale CF-5B and keep both 1/32 scale models for my collection.
Lou
It hasn't taken you long to get that far Lou, have you decided on colour schemes for your two? it would appear you have quite a choice.Regards Paul J.
This stage is relatively easy with just hacking away at what does not belong. The contour is the hard part. I will do a 434 Sqn single in Dark Gray/Olive Drab which are the colours the CF-5A had for most of its life in Canada. The Dual is a bit more delicate as I wish to do an aggressor scheme but have not selected it yet. The 1/24 just had its last coat of paint applied this afternoon and will sit until tomorrow to remove the masking tape.
Lou
Decals for the 1/24 Lizard scheme are being created and masking for the cockpit windows will be done today as well and painting them.
Lou
Decals created but not printed. I need some printer ink. The tail band needs to be redone a bit darker and will be placed over the existing decal.
Lou
Very nice job Lou, paintwork and decals look excellent .Regards Paul J.
Thank you Paul. I purchased printer ink this afternoon and will be printing tomorrow. Drying take an hour or so and then coating at least another. I guess that decal application will follow on Monday. Victoria Day is a holiday here when all the stores close so I don't have an excuse for not finishing the F-5.
Lou
P.S. What is on your bench these days?
Hi Lou, I still have the F18 on the bench, I had to make some more wing blanks as the ones I had cupped quite a lot. I have cut the fillet for the underside and marked out some of the cut and shape lines but home work has interrupted. I am currently combining two rooms into one and that's taking up most of my time. Looking forward to getting started again. Regards Paul.
Hi Lou, I'd promised a photo at least of the CF-5 mounted on a pedestal. I've got three that I've been trying to forward via my new nifty laptop but don't so far seem to be able to work it properly. Incidentally, the plaque accompanying the mounted aircraft calls it a CF-116? Maybe you might get the shots as attachments. Between this and trying to make undercarrage for my L10 - with which I'm having my share of difficulties (the model is too small) - I think I'm busy. A very nice job you've done on your CF-5's.
Cliff.
Lou, I've just sent you the three photos as shared. Hope you get them OK. Please inform me. This laptop is more trouble than it's worth!
Cliff.
Hi Lou, did you manage to get any work done on the F5 on Victoria Day?. Regards Paul.
I managed to get a few hours in. The decals are on except for one that is all black. I have been having problems with black since I got my new printer. I will find a work around. Cliff, I have not seen the photos you speak off.
Lou
I'll try again.Wish I knew how to post the photos to this site.
Cliff.
Just upload the same as the plans you submitted but select your personal album to store them in.
Lou
My friend's CF-5B in 1/24 scale is done and awaits his coming over to retrieve it sometime next week. CF116809 was one of two given this particular scheme. CF116805 had a grey bottom.
Lou
Different lighting give varying appearance to the lizard scheme.
Lou
PS This topic will remain open pending completion of the 1/32 scale CF-5B
Wow that looks amazing Lou, and your decals really look good. Look forward to seeing the other one. Regards Paul.
I agree with Paul, well done Lou!
Peter
Thank you Paul and Peter. The 1/32 CF-5A is ready for painting but the CF-5B is just rough cut for now.
Thanks again
Lou
LOU, apparently if you click on the following link(s) you can see the image?????

Cliff.
Excellent Cliff. Thank you very much. This is the first photo I have seen of a mounted Canadian aircraft with bombs attached. I am planning on a 434 Sqn bird so I could use CF116749 as my colour scheme.
Lou
Lou, I'm glad you might find some use for the photos. Now, or at least when I get a chance, I have to get back to learning how to efficiently send photos using my brand new laptop.
Cliff.
Cliff, I tried to Modify your posts to get your photos too work, I was not successful. I think they may be too large? Sorry I couldn't help and congrats on the new laptop. ;D
Great work ;) Lou. . . :P
Thanks Ray.
Wings notched to fuselage.
Lou
Seams filled and sanded awaiting primer/sealer in the next few days.
Lou
Looking forward to your progress, are you going to use the c/s from the pole mounted aircraft?. Regards Paul J.
Both will have the identical stands with clear varnish.
Lou
Primer.
More primer!!!
Lou
CF-5A awaiting decals. Just the exhaust cans require painting later this weekend.
Lou
Two more shots. This one and the CF-5B have sat for far too long.
Lou
Great camo scheme Lou, look forward to the decals. Are you having a year end blitz? .Regards Paul J.
I am trying to clear up some long running projects to make room for new stuff.
Lou
Great paintwork Lou,may the painting blitz continue.
Barry.
First decals are the tail band. An attempt to do them on white failed miserably so a white band followed by the blue on clear seems to have done the trick. My next obstacle is the white numbering on the tail and the yellow emergency arrows.
Lou
The colours stand out well Lou,you can do it !
Barry.
That's pretty good, Lou. But again when you get time will you explain the way you managed to duplicate the symbol on the decal that you've made so far. The boat I mean.
Cliff.
I will be happy to do so, however I need to know what boat you speak of.
Lou
Lou, I'm referring to what appears to be a white boat or a sailboat on the blue background.
Cliff.
Sorry Cliff. My mind was on standby when I read your comments. I have a good PDF file of the CF-5. I blew it up to approx. 1/24 scale and copied the image on the screen. I then took that and pasted to MS Paint and cropped the image to just give me the band. On reducing it to 1/32 it made a nice crisp image. I assumed the shipped faced forward on both side so I flipped the image in the MS Paint program.
Lou
Thanks very much, Lou. Think I'll copy it so that I can review what you've described. Little slow.
Cliff.
The decals have been printed and sprayed with clear gloss. The two sets is a result of my printer wanting to chew up the page I was using. It gives me a few extra parts just in case.
Lou
Very neat decals Lou.
Barry.
Thank you Barry. These are relatively easy to do. When I get rich, I will buy an Alps printer.
Lou
Nice decals Lou, do you always use MS Paint to print them off?. Regards Paul J.
I use MS Paint and MS Word a lot in doing my drawings and images. I build up some images from basic shapes such as RAF Roundels and fin flashes. I also downloaded RAF/RCAF/USAF fonts for numbers and letter codes. My biggest problem is being limited to legal size paper for drawings. Excel will do multi-page drawings but skews the image when printing. I can compensate by printing, measuring, adjusting ,printing ,measuring etc etc. It can be done but can prove expensive on paper and ink. I am in the process of doing just that with a 1/32 L-19.
Lou
The CF-5A rolled out this afternoon. For now the CF-5A will share space with the SE5A and Schweizer 2-33.
Lou
The CF-5A had no wing markings until 1980.
Lou
CF-5B to follow.
Very nice Lou, excellent work, the decals look great. Look forward to the other model. My printer has just refused to print any blue, despite trying two new cartridges and a print head clean. I can feel some more expense coming on. Best regards Paul J.
Printers in Canada are pretty cheap, however the replacement cartridge will often cost more than a new printer. Disregard the comment 4 post back on making L-19 drawings as I since found I had already done them and the model had been started last year but put away and forgotten. I check my entire basement but did not find any other similar forgotten projects.(darn)
Lou
I had to buy a new printer, (Epson, wifi type, individual inks) for £72. A full new set of ink is around £22. But compatibles are available for it when the warranty expires. Never mind about the forgotten projects, I'm sure you have enough to be getting on with. Regards Paul J.
Back to the paint shop. I messed up by spraying before shaking the can. Wow, what a mess of lumpy paint just speckled the fuselage. Damage repaired now and painting will continue. Remember, shake first, spray second!!!!
Lou
Good advice Lou,it takes about 10 minutes to shake a rattle can, first upright then invert listening to the dullness as the paint mixes with the solvent, continue to shake as you spray especially metallic colours.
Barry.
A coat of diluted paint was applied with a brush and sanded with extra-fine sandpaper. The reapplication using my air brush appears to be working. I ran out of light blue paint just as I was making the last stroke. The two remaining colours will be done after the light blue is cured and masked as my brush will not do freehand very well. I took Mark's(?) suggestion on using rubbing alcohol to dilute the Tamiya acrylic for spraying. It worked very well.
Lou
A good view of your well organised workshop Lou.
Barry.
A trip to the paint shop for a gloss coat prior to decals. Decals have been sprayed and should be ready by late evening. I think I will add another coat of gloss to the model before placing the decals.
Lou
Looking good Lou, I like the colour scheme, excellent decals as usual. Regards Paul J.
Thank you Paul. I debated between this scheme and the three shades of grey scheme.
Lou
Roll out 9 Feb 2014. The CF-5D 116815 joins the CF-5A.
Lou
New home.
Lou
Very nice Lou, they look great on display together, the decals are the finishing touch. Regards Paul J.
Really nice display Lou.
Barry.
Thank you Paul and Barry. That is the 3rd and 4th CF-5 to date.
Lou
Paul mentioned decals but the photos do not reflect that very well. Here is a better photo of the decals.
Lou
Lou, They're extremly fine representations. But as Paul has said " decals are the finishing touch." Wonderful additions to your fiine collection.
Cliff.
