Title: Handley Page Halifax - Solid Model made in Captivity
Post by: 1.JaVA_LGorrit on January 26, 2009, 01:37:04 PM
I stumbled across this article on the net...

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1107802/Pictured-The-amazing-tin-bomber-British-pilot-Great-Escape-POW-camp.html

It is about a RAF bomber pilot, who was shot down and was imprisoned in Stalag Luft III.
He made this model out of things he could find.

Talking about resourcefulness!

Thats an amazing model built under very difficult conditions,I love the sketch book as well he created,I bet this was whittled with a pen knife and basic tools to while away the boredom of being in that awful place, the Colditz Cock glider is the ultimate in what can be created in the most awkward conditions but determination beat all odds, keeping their minds active was something very important, there is that famous book called 'Flywheel' which reproduces the labours of a POW who pre war was involved with sports cars, his weekly publication was amalgamated into a single volume which has some lovely watercolour illustrations in it,seek it out as it is worth looking for.
