The fuselage is coming along.
Lou
An interesting subject Lou.
Gordon
I am struggling with the cowling. I have tried four time already. I just purchased a 15/16", 1" and 1 1/8" drill bits. I will try again.
You will succeed .
Gordon
The drill bits worked great.
Lou
Moving along. The AVRO 504 is the only active build on my bench.
Lou
In building, do you always run your interplane struts through the wings, Lou?
I always run them through. These are just toothpicks for this picture. I will be using bamboo sticks as per my usual arrangement.
Lou
So all the wings will eventually have ribs like the black wing? I still have not tried that technique.
I've been thinking of adopting that technique. I used it once before, on the SE-5a I made a few years back, and it went fairly well. Normally, I press a notch into the wood and glue the strut into the notch. But the struts often don't always want to stay put, and I wind up having to re-set and re-glue them a lot. Drilling through the wing ought to make for a neater gluing connection, too. I think I'll try your technique again next time.
Dave: I use 1mm Tamiya tape for ribs.
Jim: I find it easier to align the wings.
Lou
A bit more progress and currently waiting for 1mm Tamiya tape to arrive by mail to continue with the wings.
Lou
The masking tape for the wings finally arrived. The wings are painted and assembled. Mating of the fuselage will take place shortly.
I made a jig to align the wings. Popsicle sticks did the trick.
Lou
That is one sharp approach to making and using a wing alignment jig! I'm chagrined that I never thought of using popsickle sticks. I continue to learn new things from you, Lou. Many thanx!
You are welcomed Jim. Each model need its own jig, but they are quick to do using superglue. I always had a problem aligning the stagger until I came up with this.
Lou
To quote a line from "The Great Escape": "It's indecently brilliant!"
Looking good. Great idea using popsicle sticks ( called paddle pop sticks over here).
Cheers
Gordon
Thank you both. I call them popsicles or coffee stir sticks. They are just a few $$ at my friendly Walmart.
Lou
Seen them called "craft sticks"
You can get them as wide as 2.5cm. I have three different sizes. They are stiff so anything that requires strength is a good place for them.
Lou
The seats are installed and the rigging has begun. I am using a 50lb test braided fishing line painted with steel acrylic paint.
Lou
Roll out on 28 May 2024.
Lou
Well done again Lou.
Gordon
Thank you Gordon. I enjoyed this one.
Lou
Beautiful work, Lou. What do you use to simulate the padding along the cockpit rim?
I had some heavy brown string.
